Restore on a Dell, no optical crive

I have a friend with a Dell laptop with no optical drive and it needs a restore. How in the hell do you do this? It didn't come with any discs or a flash drive to do this.
I already told her to get a Mac at least the Airs come with a flash drive for this and the new Macs are set up to restore OTA.

Every Dell that I have had has come with a restore cd. You may want to call Dell because the hardrive may have a recovery partition you can use. Or just do a google search on activating the recovery partition.

How would one get to that? I'll have to explain to a person who knows even less than me. Not bashing Windows, this is defiantly the user is the problem...

During bootup you'll see prompts like, "press f11 for system restore" or similar.

usually on the bottom of the screen right when you first turn it on.

Otherwise, you gotta put a cd/dvd drive in theputer and get a recovery from online to CD

The Macbooks don't come with the little usb / flash drive any longer. It's a restore partition on the hard drive.

They recently quit that practice also and just went to a recovery partition.

Jimbo, there are USB external optical drives out there for $40ish that would work well. Get one with a burner and after using the restore partition, have them make their own recovery disks (unless they fubared that somehow). I hate this thing of no disks with the computer. What if the hard drive goes to shit and takes both partitions out? I doubt everyone who buys a computer makes sure to make the recovery disks the first thing they do.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.
