Windows 7 loads slooooow

The woman has a Dell Inspiron 17R (specs below) that just developed an issue. Recently she went home to the Philippines and prior to her departure the laptop was working flawlessly. Upon her return, Windows is taking up to 2 hours to boot. Once you do wait the time for it to boot fully, it works with no issues.

According to her, all she used the computer for was Skype and downloading pictures from her camera once the memory card was full. Other than that, it sat in the room.

I've tried a system restore from a known working date with no luck. I've also tried uninstalling old/unused programs, ran disk clean up, defrag and all the repair tools Windows comes with as well. Out of the 500GB she has over 300GB available. Spyware and virus scans find nothing.

Any thoughts?

Check hard drive space and Virus scan ASAP.

If you don't have a virus scanner (Shame on you), try Avast.com or MalwareBytes.com for some decent freeware ones.

If you do have a virus scanner, make sure it's got the latest virus definitions, and do a FULL scan.

If you hear any clicking, or the computer is running unusually hot, fans and/or hard drive could be failing.

Same behavior when booting into Safe Mode?

Chances are good that the machine's been compromised.

Here's the odd thing. It won't boot into safe mode at all. When you choose safe mode, it just sits at a black screen with only the cursor showing.

Hey Eric,

Still have 2/3 of the drive free and ran a full scan with Norton's. As for the actual hardware, everything sounds like the day she bought it.

I agree, gonna have to start fresh. When you do get windows back up and running, put microsoft security essentials on there to take care of your spyware and virus needs.

I'm afraid I'd have to concur with the crowd here. Someway, somehow, your laptop has been taken over. The safest way to clear this, would be a full on wipe and Windows reinstall.

If you need a hand, I can help out. I think I owe you a favor anyways.

I'm guessing its the usb devices she used to have plugged into the laptop. Windows is waiting until time out looking for them, then fully booting.

If you had issues with it not booting at all or issues after startup, then I would say you have a bad HD or malware. Otherwise, usb devices.

As for how to fix this, check the device manager for exclamation points. I would uninstall and reinstall skype and any software related to the digital camera and web cam if she was video chatting. Also check your "LAN Connections" for proxy server entries.

The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

I saw this a long time ago on a latitude 13 after installing an SSD. Try disabling ACHI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) in the BIOs. You want to enable use of conventional ATA.

The symptoms were 7 hour installs of windows 7 and 2 hour boot ups..After I changed the setting above the system booted in seconds.

Thanks for all info, help and suggestions.

The only reason I don't believe it's a virus or spyware is when it does fully boot, it works perfectly normal. Although, not being able to boot into safe mode is concerning.

When I get home this evening I will check device manager and also network connections. I know she was on 5 to 8 different networks from city to city. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll be wiping it clean and starting fresh.

Check your LAN connections for proxy server info. Control Panel->Network and Internet->Internet Options->Connections tab-> Lan Settings. All entries should be blank.

Check that your ip settings are obtain automatically for ip address and dns.
