That sucks for Grandma, but I use VLC and other free media players.

Besides, with computer being so inexpensive (compared to 5-10 years ago), now it's in the brands interest to package their own DVD/Blu-Ray playback. DELL media player, free with every machine!...that type of thing.

I'll wait until 8 is actually released. More than likely they didnt include it in the RC versions and the tech news mags are treating it like its not going to be in it.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

No, read the quotes closer...

Quote:
"Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray."

...

Says Sinofsky, "traditional media playback scenarios, optical media, and broadcast TV, require a specialized set of decoders (and hardware) that cost a significant amount in royalties." Windows 8 will allow customers the option to install a Windows Media Center upgrade to allow DVD playback at extra cost, though Microsoft is not saying exactly how high that cost will be.

Yep, sounds like a royalty thing. DVD, Divx etc all require a little kickback to display that they can play these formats. This is a big reason that when you find some home DVD players they do not list every format they play when in fact when you get it home and try it it plays almost every format. They just want to get around paying the royalty. Microsoft being so big cannot fly under the radar and probably has to remove it to keep from paying per copy.

I think this has more to do with streaming than it does anything else.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."
