iPad2 or iPad3?

Finally convinced my wife to get an iPad. Now I just need to figure out which one to get. I heard that they are not significantly different to justify the price difference. I was leaning toward iPad3 because of 4G LTE. Anyone out there who can help me make a decision please post.

get the 3

Better Retina display (noticeable when you look at them side by side)
additional cores in the processor (better for future high end apps)
4G LTE if you plan to get a cellular model.

Thanks. It's hard to make a decision since this is such an expensive purchase. The 16gb LTE model $629.00 vs. the $529 16GB 3G model.

Get the 3, I have the 2. The 3 is FAR nicer than mine. PLUS, with iOS 6 coming out, you'll be able to run SIRI on the 3

iOS is coming in the fall. Get the 3 for all the above reasons plus for the simple fact that it will be supported longer than the 2.

Or if you're a Windoze person, wait and see what they announce today

Processor may not be a noticeable difference, but the screen definitely is. If cost isn't holding you back, get the 3.

Well worth the extra $100. Had it been half the price, then maybe you could consider the 2.

If you are seriously considering the 2... Which I wouldn't... But you can get a refurbished iPad 2 from apples website cheaper then a brand new one... I don't have the exact prices but if I was going to waste money on a two... That's the route I would go

"such an expensive purchase"...is this your first computer/tablet purchase ever? I recall not too long ago spending north of $3k on a mediocre HP desktop.

My old crusty iPad2 runs circles around it. Get the 3 and splurge another $50 on a cover. You will love it.

The Gateway laptop I bought prior to college was around $2500 and it wasn't even top of the line. That would have been 10 years ago as well.

Get the 3 w/LTE and Verizon. NOT ATT.

ATT doesn't let you do the wifi hotspot.

Both have wifi capability, for surfing the net.

That's not to be confused with the iPad acting as a wifi hotspot. Where YOUR device is on 3G/4G and supplying wifi to other devices. Which is possible with both carriers, but ATT has it locked out.

The Windows surface tablet is probably not a good choice. The low end will not be running Windows 8, but instead Windows RT (not many apps). Price will be competitive with the iPad (no prices have been announced), but it looks like its lacking on hardware.

The "Pro" model Surface tablet is basically an Ultrabook (and priced as one, no prices released but estimated at $1000) Innovative for sure, but it sacrifices usability, ports, battery life (4hrs based on capacity), hard drive space. If the capability of the Pro Surface interests you, I would highly recommend looking at a MacBook Air or Equivalent Ultrabook or many many other competitor options on the market.

IF your willing to wait until fall timeframe for the Windows Surface Tablet...... it might be an option. But then I would just wait another couple months and see what Apple or Samsung comes out with in spring.

Thanks for the write-up. The wifi hotspot is no really important to me since I'm not planning on having a monthly plan. I'm just more concerned on which service would be better. Sounds like LTE would be better over the AT&T. After looking at the Windows tablet I'm not really sold on it since its something new and will most likely have it's problems.

You can get LTE speeds on both carriers. Coverage-wise, I believe Verizon has more spots with LTE at the moment. It is by no means nation wide coverage, but in Chicago, you should have not problem getting the fast connection. The downside is that when you fall off the LTE network, it goes back to Verizons CDMA 3G network, which is slower that ATT.

To Simplify it a bit.

Verizon
LTE = 30mb/s+ Coverage in most major cities (Equivalent speed to home cable broadband)
CDMA (Old Standard) 3G = 1 mb/s Coverage almost everywhere (Way more towers than ATT, so you get coverage even in the boonies)

ATT
LTE = 30mb/s+ Coverage in SOME major cities (chicago included)
HSPA+ (New Standard) 3G = 6 mb/s Coverage almost everywhere (not in the boonies)
GSM 3G = 2.5 mb/s Coverage almost everywhere (not in the boonies)
Edge = 0.2mg/s Worthless except to grab texts.

Verizon has better coverage overall. But if you stay near cities, ATT will be faster on average.

You don't have to have a monthly plan. You can sign up for monthly service as you need it, then cancel or suspend it until you need it again. No contracts like on phones. Verizon LTE is as fast or faster than wireless.
