Home Audio help

Ok so I have never setup any kind of home sound system. Just picked up a samsung 1000W system. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...&skuId=4789794.

I have an xfinity HD box and an insignia 42" lcd. The blue ray player works fine with the speakers but how do I get to use the speakers watching regular tv? Or say I put on a movie channel and want to use the sound system for it, how do you hook that up?

You will need to run an optical cable from your cable box to the input of the receiver or just some audio cable. Then switch it on source to tv

There is an audio out on your cable box. Connect that to the audio input on the Samsung receiver.

Alright, ordered one from them. My question now is, I still dont understand how this works. The reciever is still connected to my tv hdmi so I can get the blue ray player. If I plug my xfinity box into the reciever with the optical cable, do I have to use the samsung remote for the reciever for volume or will my tv remote control that?

Odysseys said something before about a top-notch smart remote (can't remember exactly what he recommended). That might be your best option so you don't have to juggle a sh!tload of remotes.

this is how it should look

cable/satelite plugged into the home theater via hdmi
all you accessories with also plug into the reciver by hdmi or coax or optical

the reciever then has a hdmi port out which will go to the tv and push all video to the tv

I'm gonna see if I can find a code from samsung to get the volume to work on there remote otherwise il start researching em starting with the harmony that was suggested. Thanks for the help

Harmony remotes all work the same though the interface and number if controlled devices will change. Plus some offer rf and ir outputs. Bottom line is a $50 logitech might work as well as the $300 models depending on your usage. There is no perfect remote. Believe me.

Oh and I know you don't have tivo, but I do and you can tell the tivo remote to control the receiver for volume only. You might be able to do the same.

Velodyne is 1500w "dynamic", but 750 RMS. And that 750 RMS is even misleading as it's probably a single note test tone, and probably at 1000hz...which obviously isn't even in the sub-woofer frequency. It's all about bending the numbers to convince the consumer theirs is better.

That said, the Velodyne is a great woofer.

Well, the SV is what 648cc in real specs? At least it's close to it's name.

I wasn't laughing at his apparent lack of power, but the marketing bullshit. It's like saying my 1.5L Scion is a 200MPH car*

Allow me to elucidate and educate:

Here is from the ad linked in the original post:

This Samsung HT-E5400ZA 5.1-ch. home theater system features 1000 watts of power to deliver strong sound and 3D Blu-ray playback for enhanced visuals. Built-in Wi-Fi enables easy Internet connectivity

Warranty Terms - Parts: 1 year limited
Warranty Terms - Labor: 1 year limited
Total System Power: 1000W
Front Surround Power/Channel: 165W x 2; 170W center
Rear Surround Power/Channel: 165W x 2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, in real life, we don't add up all the HP of all our cars and say we have 1000HP car.
Lets do some simple maths.
165X2= 330
+170= 500
+165X2 = 830
+ 170w Subwoofer?? = 1000

They don't say how they got those numbers. They could have (literally) jammed 30 amps of juice through the amp at 1000hz and the amp made 165watts for .5 seconds before it popped and started glowing. Some guy nodded and said, yep, this is 165 watts X 5.1, lets call that 1000 watts.

If you actually measured, it could probably be 65 watts RMS using full frequency pink noise, per channel, and *that* is what should be on the specs, not 1000 watts. But that doesn't sell stereos does it? Real numbers, with real meaning lets people realize show shyte a lot of equipment actually is.

So no, I'm not making fun of anyone, I'm just pointing out the marketing bullshit.
