Who can tell me about home projectors?

I was back at my parents house the other weekend and my Dad as a pretty good location in their basement for a projector. I installed surround sound in the room before we finished it so thatís already in there. The room is longer and narrow with windows on the right side. As for lighting, there are dimming recessed lights into the ceiling with full sized windows (bank of 3 casement windows) that are along the one side, with the ground outside going about half way up the exterior wall. Iíve requested a picture of the room to better explain it.

Anyways, aside from the signal to a projector location, the media infrastructure is basically there. Iíve been working in the AV industry for the last 8 years or so, but never really got an opportunity to learn much about projectors. I know back in the day all you needed was at least 1K lumens and a dark room, but that was back in college when we were playing video games projected on a wall in an apartment. Looking to step it up a bit. Initial budget was going to be around $1K for a projector and a screen. Content will mostly be DVD/Blu-Ray and HDTV (probably entirely sports) if that plays into it at all. No need for 3D or 4K resolution or anything at this point so hopefully that helps with the budget side. I am hoping there is still enough traffic on here that someone can give me some ideas or tell me where to start looking. Thanks guys!

You'll have to excuse the mess, my sister's college stuff has taken over part of the basement at this point.

The far wall would be the intended location for the screen, covering up the tube TV location and hopefully most of that opening (may turn it into a small storage area that's covered in sheet rock, or maybe just a media rack of some sort, really to be determined). The furniture layout may have to change as well, there is currently a couch on the left on the other side of the treadmill. This will at least get an idea of the space.

Spring for a 90" panel. I did a projector and unless your are going HUGE, like at least 110 or 120, the lighting kind of makes it a pain
