computer help

bought a dell 20.1 lcd wide screen, hooked it up yesterday

just got my geforce fx5500 video card today
after the install booted up my computer
started up fine
icons were huge though and I could not see my task bar
I tried to adjust anything I could think of
even when I hit the start button that would not come up
I restarted the computer, it went through the first few screens ok
but then just became black, desk top would not show up

I switch the monitor cable back to my old video card and the desk top appeared with no problems

what could be causing this? what can I try?

Josh

You need to start the computer in safe mode so that you can adjust the display settings to a default level. You enter safe mode by pressing F8 before Windows boots up. Once in safe mode. Right click on the desktop, click on settings, adjust the screen resolution to 800*600. This should allow you to restart the computer with basic screen resolution settings with the new video card and monitor, and slowly adjust the settings to your liking.

Using your old video card, download and install the new driver for your new video card. Then install your new video card. Usually this takes care of issues.

Would his screen go black though? Sounds like more than a resolution issue. But, I could be wrong.

If this doesn't work, go into the display properties again, under advance settings, monitor, and lower the refresh rate of the monitor. One of these should do the trick.

Wiat I just noticed you did not uninstall your old video card before installing your new video card. I suggest:

Using old video card, download/install new driver for new video card.
Uninstall old video card
Install new video card.

On second thought, just uninstall the old card and install the new card. Save the driver update until after you know the card is functioning.

Sounds like you need a mac! But for those windows users i still have some sympathy...

Sounds like a resolution issue to me, like what was being said before, make sure you have the right drivers installed. Also, when the device is installed, and you reboot the computer, dont go crazy with the resolution settings until you know it works. Sometimes the monitor cannot support some resolutions and/or refresh rates which cause them to flip out.

Also, i do not recall, but there may be a setting in your BIOS which lets you pick which display adapter is the default device. If not in the bios, you can set that up in Windows (im assuming you are using Windows XP).

Or....just get a mac...its pretty much plug and play...any monitor, any tv..hehe

Hope that helped.

You shold disable the onboard video chipset via the BIOS, but it sounds like you've got it.

Make sure you're using the latest driver set from NVidia as well.

Just wondering? Is the video card PCI or AGP? That might have something to do with it.

The performance increase, lack of viruses, increased security, and lack of all the hassles above is well worth the cost of a Mac.

But you can't change everything in a Mac. I can buy some parts tomorrow and make a completely different and new PC. I would have to buy another Mac, more flexibility with a PC.

Good point, Mac has been the same, had all the features you have to buy and add to a PC, and then some for years. Now in a PC, feel free to change it, get all the practice you want since you'll have to when your drivers aren't current, or aren't compatible with the new release of MS, or all of a sudden... it just slows down. Hell, my Dell Latitude has had is OS reinstalled 10 or more times... I love PCs!

I love PCs. If they weren't such crap, I'd have a problem making a living. Now for relaxing and not having to work on my machine... I use a Mac. But for income, the more PCs the merrier.

Regarding flexibility, my Mac runs OS X, Unix, Linux and any crappy flavor of MS you might desire (all at the same time!). My PCs, hell they can't even run the OSs that were designed for them very long with any kind of stability.

Find a guy who knows Macs and PCs and prefers PCs, difficult. However, find a PC user who hates, challenges or dislikes Macs, yet he doesn't know both platforms. That second fella is easy to find.

My Mac related income - ZERO. My PC related income - 100%. I love PCs. By the way, a Mac starts at $499.

Found.

I started on an Apple II in grade school and moved into Macs over the years. I didn't get a IBM-compatible until high school, but still worked as a Mac tech until 21.

I haven't run a Mac at home in quite a long time. The more I worked with PC systems the less I used a Mac over time. Eventually I just took it off my desk and never looked back. I was probably one of very few people that was skilled in both systems for a long time. Most Mac bashers were PC-ignorant, and most PC bashers just didn't know how to use them correctly. The Mac interface was defintely designed for the lesser skilled user.

Microsoft pays my bills, so I practice what I preach. It's kinda of hard to setup up a multiple-domain Exchange test environment on Macs

Oh yea, I can build a nice desktop for $499 too. Price point really isn't an issue anymore.

I hated macs, and never wanted to switch...till i did.

Ever since then I've never even considered going back to a PC. What Wink is saying is 100% right. performance, lack of viruses, increased security which all result in increased productivity!

ex: my office...constant problems, windows crashing....spy ware, ad ware, worms...and wonderful things called licenses. For $499.99 i could buy a mac, which would out perform a top of the line PC any day of the week...and its just a breeze to work with.

Just my humble thoughts

Wikipedia - Adrenaline Junkie - An adrenaline junkie is somebody who feels as if they are addicted to adrenaline. Adrenaline junkies may enjoy competing in extreme sports like skydiving, surfing, motorcycle racing, or anything else that gets their heart rate up. This sort of addiction is brought on by enjoying the (adrenaline) "rush" gained from these activities.

Let's see...I upgraded from my Pentium3 to Athlon64 and whoa lo and behold my computer is a gazillion times faster!

My mommy taught me well not to eat candy from strangers, and I never had a virus or spyware so far. Hate me for this one, but if you're writing a virus why would you write it for the kind of computer that only a minute fraction of computer users use?

Programs crashing...yeah, mainly because of third-party software developers...yeah, so much software available for the macs historically. If you had a choice of only 4 apples, rather than 100, chances are you'll find a fewer number of apples with worms...no pun intended heh.

Talking of macs, you folks do know that your favorite computer maker is going to stick Pentium processors into them in the future, right? Or the latest greatest invention for the macs - a mouse ... with ... more than one button!!! Oh my goodness!!! (if you would like to verify these claims, go to theinquirer.net)

Hmm.
