Cool HELP! (Anti-Virus)

I need to know where to download a good anti-virus program for free.

Norton is expired and computer will be going to work office after the first of the year and put on there network, firewall and anti-virus progams.

But I need a quality solution now. PLEASE!

I know there are some free programs that are even better than Norton but I can't seem to find that info any more. (Not for ad junk because I have SpyBot and AdAware for that.)

Please help ASAP. I need to do some work related research that involves alot of online surfing. I don't want to crash my system. Anyone? Please?!??!???!?!?!!!

Are we there yet?

I use Fix it Utilities I got at Best Buy. It was 29.99 but you don't have to pay a yearly fee after that. The lastest version has a firewall now too. VCOM makes it and they are the ones who supply Norton and Mcafee all the anti-virus stuff. So 1 time price and you get updates unlimited as long you own your computer.

What version of Norton do you have? Not that I would know anything about this (cough, cough), but I am sure there is a crack online for extra time added if you know what I mean?

I use Avast antivirus and Zonealarm firewall free versions and that combo works better than when I had Mcafee's ISS6. But those are usually onlyfree on personal computers and not business ones.

AGV has a free anti-virus also. But its not as good as avast IMO.

I've heard good things about Avast antivirus. I don't think it's totally free but you get a two month trial period.

I'm pretty sure there are a few other excellent antivirus programs that are free. Search on Google or wait for someone to post up more info.

Well there you have it!

I still think there are some other programs that are free but again, I don't know what they are anymore. Download Avast or wait for more posts. . .

Blocker

Wish I would've seen this sooner. For anti-virus I use AVG. Go to download.com to get it. Make sure it's the one that doesn't expire which typically means just the plain ol anti-virus without the bells and whistles. I've been using it for about 5 years now.
It's just as good as Norton and McAfee. TOTALLY FREE and auto updates and no expiration of any kind.

Firewall I use ZoneAlarm. It's an incredible blocker. You have to "train" it though. It's nothing to it. It just means whatever site you go to a pop up from ZA shows on the screen asking you do you want to give whatever permission to access the net (or your pc). You hit yes or no. In that same ballon you also can check "Save answer" so that it won't ask you again for that particular reason hence "train". Been using that for 5 years as well. TOTALLY FREE. Get the one without all the bells and whistles.

Only a 30 day trial, but excellent protection. They also have all the standalone removers for immediate download.

Is AVG really that good? I don't think I've heard of them but. . . so what. Give AVG a try and post up the results!

It's a program that you can either get anti-virus w/bells and whistles or just plain anti-virus. Since I use other things to help my pc, I just download the anti-virus.

Oh and yes, it's that good. It's equal to Norton and McAfee without the rape.

I used AVG on my laptop, before it had a run in with..my fist.

I'm in a situation similar to Mike here. The MacAfee and Norton were on there as a trial. never subscribed and I get goofy error messages on startup from Norton, and continous "reminders" about mcAfee. Should just uninstall them both and get these. I also think they don't talk too well to each other since bootup takes forever.

AVG is fair, but for the price(free) its great.....

Nod32 by eset has had the best detection rate of all of them for the last three years.

Seems like most recreational users have never heard of it, but most IT professionals are in the know.

Nod32 is my personal pick, followed by Mcafee Enterprise with e-policy orchestrator running on a SQL backend. But the retail version of Mcafee that home users get sucks ass. DONT EVEN waste your money or time on it.

Glad you like it. I've done the Norton and McAfee game. Tired of the tricks they provide. I've used AVG for years. You get the basic one (they have another with a load of stuff that isn't free) and you're set to go.
Everytime you turn on your pc is instantly looks for updates! Super fast and user friendly. Gotta love that.

Argh..I put AGV and ZoneAlarm on my computer. I've used AGV before so I know how to handle that, but Zone Alarm is starting to become a pain. I accidently clicked 'deny every time' to a request to open whatever program it uses to open .jpgs in mail (run32dll.exe or something like that). I looked for the program on the ZA list and couldn't find it. I'd hate to uninstall it and have to reinstall it because of that, but if I can't find the goofy program name in the list, I can't change it. This is seriously slowing down my ability to check out pR0n that's emailed to me.

Okay, where is a free Zone Alarm? I went to Download.com and it was 11 days. Now, if I don't click the correct buttons (red 'x' instead of cancel, for example), it locks my computer up. PAIN.

Just go to ZA's website

Heres their d/l page
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten..._freedownloads

I prefer sticking with ZA free firewall version 5.5. 6 seems buggy.

You're better off with AVG. Zonealarm will use more system resources. I run Zonealarm as my firewall and it works well, but I've deactivated the anti virus that came with it and use AVG. Trust me that you're much better off with AVG. It also detected much better than ZA.

I would have to agree with going with Nod32. I have had AVG and it missed stuff that Nod32 picked up. Hell even Norton didn't pick some stuff up. Nod32 in my mind is the best. You can try it for 30 days for free.

Wow... you PC guys have to deal with all sorts of issues.

Nah, just kidding. Sounds like you have a lot of great answers in there. TechTV and a few other reviews used to have AGV at the top rated program, so it was highly regarded. Personally, I use Norton on my PCs and just reinstall.

so which is better AGV or Nod32. I downloaded Nod32 yesterday it's good. Do I also need ZoneALarm with Nod32? I also have SpySweeper. Do I really need all of them or is Nod32 JUST anti-virus?
