I have been getting this damn license error from the day i bought this computer. Dells chat help sucks, they want you to pay for third party software support even though its a machnie they JUST sold you! google searches have turned up some fixes but nothing that fits the bill.

long story short any video file that is marked yes under protected will not play I get an error

Tony, when I've done that I found that sometimes getting drivers from other players helps. First, you should have every common player on your system because websites default to a player sometimes.
I have WMP 10, Quicktime, Realplayer and lastly get Divx. Depending on what you're trying to play, one of them will play it. For all audio though, I use WinAmp.
Also, open Windows Player, go to Tools then Options. Click on the "Player" tab. Make sure that "Download Codecs" is checked. Then click on "Files Type" tab, look at the list and decide what you want Windows Media player to play.

Lastly, bookmarkd www.tweakxp.com. Go to that site and look around. Great site to help kill the bugs of XP overall. An example would be a search I did for you problem: http://tweakxp.com/article37248.aspx Now I don't know if this stuff would help, but I know as a whole, it sure did help me. Porn sometimes requires a license.

Remember: Before you do anything, make sure you create a "Restore Point" on minimum. It's just playing it safe.

+1 So true.

Something simple is just reinstall 10. You shouldn't have to go down to 9 just to play. Sounds like a file got misplaced. Try even defragmenting. Sometimes it's just simple maintenance.

Never had a problem with 10 even though I heard lots of bad stuff. I have however, had many problems when I get a computer from a store or mail order. I'll have problems with small apps running, however these problems never seem to persist when I wipe whatever crap Dell or Gateway put on the pc and install everything myself. Not to mention, all these pre-made pc's come with a few services, some of which are useless, but load every time you start up. My guess is that whatever they tweak ahead of time, might crap up other stuff.

Suggestion is for the future to wipe the pc and load a copy of Windows from a good disc.

By the way, what is so horrible about Windows? Of course there's quirks, bugs, and hacks...but these exist in every OS. I do like the Mac OS, however I don't think XP is as bad as it's sometimes made out to be. '95 or ME I would say were crap, but I can't knock XP as much. It's also tough to knock Microsoft, they've put out a lot of good stuff. Tell me that Server 2000 or 2003 is crap or that their games suck too? Don't think so...ok rant over.
