Help with my SanDisk 1.0gb card

Okay you techno I have been experiementing with a SanDisk 1.0 gb card and my Nikon Coolpix E4200 camera. I have been shooting little mov files about 43 seconds. Which I download off the camera using Comcast Photoshow. I started wondering exactly how much I could put on the card and how long it would take to download from the camera, so I set up the camera on the "Movie" setting pushed the button and walked away. I came back 30 minutes later and the camera had shut itself down. So I decided to playback the mov file, which I have done in the past, I turn on the camera, and the following message is displayed "This Card cannot be used!", so I immediately think the card is full, I have to downloaded the movie to the computer, I plugged the camera into the computer via the supplied USB cable turn the camera back on, and wait for Photoshow to recognize the camera, which it doesn't, so I cannot download the mov file. So, I think I'll re-format the card using the camera, it won't allow me to select format card option. None of my computers have a card reader built in. So how do I proceed?

A liitle history on the camera, it's about two years old, I have never updated the firmware? The SanDisk card was an recent ebay purchase, but I used it successfully a few times.

Remember I'm a complete maroon on this shit, so no computer speak, plain english please!

Sometimes goodbye is your second chance.

Have you tried using the camera to format the card, or possibly using a cardreader to wipe the card, so its empty?

Just a few thoughts...

Well, to find out if it's the camera or the card you'll need a card reader to see if ya can format it on the puter. The readers are really cheap nowadays, here is one for $10 that covers just about every kind of cards:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...9374&CatId=962

If ya can't access/format card using the card reader on the puter, the card is f'd up.

Maybe you can ask someone else with a MP3 player or camera that uses that type of card, if they can format for you before you buy something.

You can go to wallgreens or walmart photo section and see if the card is readable.... you might even be able to delete the huge file,

Does the small capacity memory card that came with the camera still work ?
might be that the camera doesn't understand the larger capacity memory card or has a limit on file size.

card readers are cheap like bwa said,
If you are near the city I can try and read it for you.

do you have a pda? try sticking the SD card in your pda to format it and then put it back in your camera afterwards if successful

Rick try using your camera to reinitialize/format the card. The manual should show how to do this. I had to do it once on my old Olympus camera. If that doesn't work, try cleaning off the exposed gold/copper contacts.

As for your original inquiry, your camera can shoot videos up to 26 seconds in large format 640x480 and up to 216 seconds in small format 160x120. Reason being is the internal buffer is 12Megs and the camera just can't keep up. Once the buffer is filled, it has to be flushed to secondary storage.

JAke...I have tried that, it will not allow me to select that option. I don't have a card reader.

I cannot format the card with camera...it will not allow to select that feature. I can re-format my older smaller 256mb card, but not the 1 GB card.

I'm going to Wolf Camera, where the camera was purchased, maybe they can read and delete the card.

They're actually very helpful. Especially if you are absent minded or have a bad memory.

Update.....I was ripped off by the ebayer seller. Card marked SanDisk 1.0 GB SD, what it actually is a 512MB card, a counterfeit! SanDisk tech support, very helpful, the CSR knew what it was the moment I read him the serial number on the back. Getting a full refund! For all those who had suggestions, your help was appreciated!
