Computer? Adding external hard drive

Adding an external hard drive to have the (kids) games save will it work? My daughter's computer is old 1.0 Mhz, 20G HD, 128MB. Also, I'm upgrading the memory to 512MB. The computer is primarily use for games and kids games online.

Depending on what OS you are running you should be fine. If you have XP and usb 2.0 you should be fine. It will easily recognize it and work fine. If you have usb 1.1 it will be a lot slower. If you are running anything other than xp you could need drivers and its kind of a pain in the ass!

Most games will work from a fast external hardrive. Most kids games should.

You will see the most "improvement" in performance for adding the memory. Now the 1.0 Mhz kind of worries me, I think you probably meant 1 gig. As long as you have a 32mg vid card, most kids games should run.

Cost wise you may be better off just buying a new system. It's crazy how cheap they are now. You can get something online new for less than 400 that will come with a huge hard drive, OS, 512mb or more and a faster cpu. You are going to spent atleast 1/4 of that much on a external HD. Just something to think about.

Correction - 1 Ghz.
OS - XP SP2

Thanks guys. I've been thinking getting a new one but I have 3 desktop and a laptop. I can't justify buying a new one because she is only 7 years old.

A refurb compaq from tiger direct with an Athlon Sempron can be had for just over a couple hundred bucks, and it's LOADED. The drop in electricity used from the older dinosaurs can pay for themselves in a year or two. The older cpus and HD's drew an aweful lot of juice compared to newer ones today.

Not only that but older motherboards will only recognize drives up to a certain size.

If he has a 1 ghz processor, the MBs that supported that should recognize almost anything you toss at it. If not, a simple bios upgrade can fix that.. but I doubt that would be required.
