Computer Help Please...

K, i bought a new Dell computer in the fall...mainly for internet use and burning CD's to be honest...well, i've recently started trying to burn CD's and every program i have to do so freezes when i try to use it...i've got to end task and restart the computer.

...the only programs i've added are Microsoft Office 2003 and Itunes...itunes is the only program that i can burn with...but i've got to rip the cd first and then burn it to a disc...could Itunes be the problem??...should i try removing it??

Thanks in advance...

...i'm kinda compooter retarded

Oh boy...where should I begin...
Do you have an anti-virus application on the PC and if so is it UP TO DATE??
Do you have an application for spyware such as Spybot or AD-aware or Microsoft anti-spyware? If so, are these up to date and have you scanned with them recently?
If not, update and scan and then see how you do. If and when you do this (or if you already have) and still have issues, post up and we will take it from there.

Have you been able to burn w other software before itunes? Usually a Dell PC w/ a pre-installed burner will have software to burn cd's. Have you ever been successful using itunes to burn in the past?

The computer came with a Sonic burner and Musicmatch...didn't try 'em before i got itunes...i can burn with itunes, but i've got to rip onto the computer first instead of burning right off the CD...which makes me think Itunes has something to do with it...but i removed it and still zippo

When it locks up and you bring up task manager click on the "Processes" tab and see what "Image Name" is bogging the system.

If your referring to the CPU column...it's "system idle process" which is at 99...the largest memory usage is "mediahub.exe", which sounds suspicious but i did a spysweep with the latest spybot program...

mediahub has to do with your dvd program.

Have you tried downloading a free version of nero?

Bill Nye the Science Guy (LOL)

Well sounds like there is conflict with software. Besides the anti-virus, you should have at least 3-5 different spyware programs. I know that seems extreme but some find what others don't. Check to see when you're trying to rip/burn if anything else is running. Sometimes it's just simple conflict with programs and something needs not to run during your rip/burn.

Also, try the Nero program www.ahead.com (?). I have the full version and that has been the best for me. Update whatever software I think you mentioned Itunes. And howl much RAM do you have? If it's 256MB and you're running Windows XP that can be a problem too. Windows XP requires 256MB so if you're there it'll limit you from doing other things. With todays computers you want a minimum of 512MB.

Try doing the basics like defrag, scandisk, etc. Then go for whichever advise given to you from the members.

A great site that helps me sometimes is: www.tweakxp.com

At what point is the 'freeze' happening?

At launch time, or when you actually tell it OK, NOW BURN THIS ?

This does not sound like a virus/spyware problem. This sounds more like a driver program hogging the resources. We just need to figure out which one and remove it so it will let go. In the past, I have had conflicts with Window's own CD burning stuff 'blocking' things like Nero before.

I forgot which way to get to it, but either right-click on the drive itself and go to Properties, or
Right clicking on My computer --> Hardware --> device manager --> CDRW --> properties and unchecking allow burning of cd's (or something similar, I'm doing this from memory) and reboot. That may "Free" up the resource that was hogging/blocking the other programs from working.

I find it interesting that iTunes actually works... That does raise a suspicion.. Even if you 'remove' it, it really doesn't "remove" it... Did you reboot after that 'removal' ?

Yeah Arch, i rebooted...it's a really wierd deal...i'll try messing with the drive itself...it locks up just by opening my burning program...sometimes it will make it to the point of asking it to "start burn", and clicking that locks it up every time.

Thanks guys...

This may sound wierd.. but Try disconnecting the cable from the MB and the drive, and reconnecting it... Or.. better, repace it.

It may be a little far fetched, but a wobbly electrical signal from a bad cable or loose connection could send this thing out to lunch. Let's make sure we're dealing w/ a software problem by covering the hardware bases first.

You wouldn't by chance have ever had any lockups or freeezes from intense HD activity, would you?

Can you burn using Windows Explorer, where you drag/drop stuff to the drive, then tell it to write it to a disc?

This is getting wierder...i went to "My Computer", right clicked the D drive, and the whole thing locked up again...and this time, all the icons, everything was gone from the desktop...had to just shut the thing off...it's so odd that it worked with itunes but nothing else.

You could always try reinstalling the other burning software too afterwards.

This sounds more and more like a driver issue.. *OR* the imapi service is not launching right under admin_tools --> services

Im def thinking driver issue. What version of Windows and what version of ITunes. I run XP Pro and the latest ITunes and havent had any issues. The driver thats muckin this up might not have anything to do with ITunes until it actually starts to fire up. Some sort of conflict. Hard to do these sorts of things via chat board for me. Take a look at updating all your drivers, running the latest service pack for your Windows version and reinstalling ITunes from the Mac site.

The info I find on that type of error code is:

Drive not ready, Drive reset occured, Bus reset Occured, Command Unrecognized.

The computer talks to the drive in a packetized language over the cables. It's up to the driver to understand what commands the drive itslef can understand. For whatever reason, there is a discrepency between what the driver *THINKS* the drive can understand versus what it CAN actually understand. SOmetimes, these differences are minor annoyances, but do not impede using the product in about 97% of the normal use scenerios.

Now, we either have that 'language' problem going on, or you actually have a bus/cable problem. I would tend to say it's a driver issue still because a lot of times when a driver gets back something unexpected from the device, it resets the device in an attempt to make it 'behave'

Ok, that's a bunch of geek mumbo jumbo, I know... Sorry...

Have you checked the Dell support site to see if there are any updates to Windows XP drivers for the cdrom/burner you have?

How old is this machine, what model is it, and what's the processor you have in there?
