Xp Pro x32 v. x64 (For Turion 64 CPU)

I've noticed we have a lot of very computer saavy CLSBers, and I was hoping to get some advice. For the last few years, I've been a dedicated Apple/OS X guy, and as a result have remained totally oblivious to the Windows world and it new technologies. Unfortunately, I need to switch to a Windows based notebook for school. I've ordered an HP with a 2.2 Ghz Turion 64 CPU and was wondering whether XP Pro x64 would net me any appreciable performance gains, and if it is backward compatible with standard x32 apps. Can anyone offer any insight here?

The driver set for X64 is not as complete as regular WinXP/32.

What do you plan on doing with it? 64 bit software development?
If not, you're probably best served sticking to regular XP for the time being.

Like Arch said, unless theres a really good reason to move to 64 id stay with 32.

The drivers will not be as plentiful for 64 so why cause unnecessary problems

Thanks guys, thats kinda what I thought. Just seems like a waste to have a 64 bit CPU and software that doesn't take advantage. Shoulda bought the Intel core duo one. OH well. It's Windows and is gonna suck either way

Dual core CPUs rock. You can watch/rip a DVD, do a virus scan, hijack a thread all while watching HQ pr0n with no lag.

You can do that with a single core cpu too if you have the surrounding hardware and software in such a way that it minimizes resource contention.
