CD's and ripping music ?

I bought some CD's the other day (Sam Goody going out of business sale). Anyway, when I brought them home and starting ripping them, one of them was different. When I put the cd in my computer, it autoran and a window popped up with a media player of some sorts. It was a flash program that had all the tracks listed and play, pause, stop etc buttons. Ok, I could play any of these tracks just fine. There was also a "make copy of cd" button. There was also a "copy music to computer" button. When I did that, it moved the tracks to my hard drive. That was fine as well. But when I looked at the tracks on my hard drive, they were all like 12k, 15k, 20k files. Things that make you go "Hmm..." So, I opened up my mp3 player manager software and tried to move these tracks to my mp3 player... no dice. It said I didn't have enough permission blah blah something or other. I tried to convert the "secured WMA" file to MP3 format with no luck either. So my question is "How the hell to I get these tracks that I PAYED for, onto my mobile device?" I bought the songs. I bought the rights to play the music for myself on whatever player I want as long as I don't copy them to make money or distribute right??? I mean, I didn't just buy the physical media of the CD, I bought the rights to play the music. Or I am wrong?? I am so pissed that I'm thinking about writing a letter to the record label and requesting my money back for the CD seeing how I didn't get what I payed for. What do you guys think?

What are you using to rip it with? I've always had good luck with iTunes. They use a database (Gracenote) to identify tracks.

By the way;a good resource to find music for your mp3 player is...

Don't be freaked out when they convert your money to Rubles... it's all good.

This is what I got from the web about the content of the CD...

Content/ Copy-Protected CD
This product limits your ability to make multiple digital copies of its content, and you will not be able to play this disc or make copies onto devices not listed as compatible. Content/ copy protected CDs should allow limited burning, as well as ripping into secure Windows Media Audio formats for playback with most compatible media players and portable devices. In rare cases, these CDs may not be compatible with computer CD-ROM players, DVD players, game consoles, or car CD stereos, and often are not transferable to other formats like MP3.

Anyone ever seen anything like that before?

The autorun isn't a problem... I can get by that. I can run explorer and see the tracks, but they are all small files. And there are a bunch of hidden files that run some license shit and back end aps... Wierd.

My wife bought a CD like that and she wanted it on her MP3 and it wouldn't let her. So I still have the old CD player that you can burn CD's (in a stereo system). So I put her new CD in the CD player and then put a CDR on the burner side and I was able to copy that new CD w/o a problem. Then I put the "copied" CD in the computer and we were able to transfer them to the MP3 player. Since we used a CDR we can just use it again.
CD’s can beat new technology, but it can’t beat old technology All she wanted was to do like you, just put the CD on her own MP3 player. And I was going to sell that old thing too, and I'm glad i kept it. It does take a little more time, but at lease she got it on her MP3 player. She's not going to make copies and sell it

Yeah, I was hoping it was... but it wasn't a Sony disc. It was from EMI. (Capitol Records Nashville)

up, up down down left right left right b a select (for 2 players) start... that is the 30 guy contra code. My friends grandma has a joystick with all these old games on it including contra, however the code does not work. She bought it for when the little kids come over for holidays and stuff but the kids never got near it once we saw contra.

I was pretty sure there was only one "b,a" sequence, but I wasn't 100%. And FYI, the new contra game for PS2... the code, (which has been dubbed the Konami code) works!! AMAZING!

I think that if you write a letter you might want to spell check. I also think it would be fun to be in the room when some record company worker reads it and then posts it in the break room for laughs.

Ahh yes, our wonderful DRM technology is finally catching up. When folks are all anti-piracy...this is what we end up with. Disc's you can't copy. No one cares until it's too late

Anyway, the shift key may work for you. That menu which loads or whatever you clicked ok to actually loads the copy protection on your computer (unless they've changed something). So the autorun is bad. Any time you insert any audio cd period you should hold down the shift key to bypass the copy protection...so Vcook was actually right.

Next, this should not be mixed up with the rootkit thing that Sony had because those cd's should all have been pulled by now. That's what the lawsuit was about. The rootkit basically opened up the pc for others to do what they like...rootkits are used by what the public would call 'hackers' all the time. Was kind of Sony to put it on pc's to save everyone else some work

Oh, and at the moment...the RIAA has changed it's mind that it's ok to make copies for personal use. They are pushing for a bill which basically makes it illegal to copy anything for personal use, period. This means you buy a cd for the car, the mp3 for your player, and another one if you want it on your computer. Here's a statement from the RIAA...

" The [submitted arguments in favor of granting exemptions to the DMCA] provide no arguments or legal authority that making back up copies of CDs is a noninfringing use. In addition, the submissions provide no evidence that access controls are currently preventing them from making back up copies of CDs or that they are likely to do so in the future. Myriad online downloading services are available and offer varying types of digital rights management alternatives.

For example, the Apple FairPlay technology allows users to make a limited number of copies for personal use. Presumably, consumers concerned with the ability to make back up copies would choose to purchase music from a service that allowed such copying. Even if CDs do become damaged, replacements are readily available at affordable prices. Similar to the motion picture industry, the recording industry has faced, in online piracy, a direct attack on its ability to enjoy its copyrights. (emphasis added)"
