DVD media...

What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?? Are the the same?

I know that DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL are different. Both dual layered, but there is a difference between the + ad -. Is the same true with the regular recordable DVD's?

+ and - are different. One is CLV and the other CAV. Constant Linear and Constant Angular. I forget which is which. the DVD+R is better for movies and DVD-R is better for data.

Would that explain why I can record movies just fine on both, but when I play the DVD+R, it works. BUt when I try to play the DVD-R it won't bring up the menu screen?? It recognizes it as a DVD disk, but won't play??

media differences would not cause this problem. I've burned movies to both types of media with no apparent differences. Keep looking!

It's just 'cause there are compatibility issues between DVD players and different types of DVD media. Most DVD+/-R discs are both compatible with something like 90% of DVD players, I think.

+1 Any problems you have writing to or reading from + or - is due to the player/recorder.

Could it be anything with my software? A compaitbility issue with the Pinnacle software I'm using? I can't find anything online about it... just that it supports DVD+R DL and not DVD-R DL.

What exact software and rev and what drive do you have?

I'll partially retract what I put up earlier... Sometimes a software upgrade or firmware update can 'fix' bad original programming in software that may have prevented it in the first place.

Also, if your drive was made before the -R DL spec was done and adopted, well.. it's braindead... Plextor in particular offers firmware updates for their drives to let them recognize new formats and make them usable.

well... update. I put in a blank DVD+R and tried burning it again. SUCCESS!!! So the problem is with my software. I'm using Pinnacle Studio 9 (and just downloaded the update from the web to 9.4 or some shit) Anyway. I'm using a BENQ DVD burner.

The other option might be that the DVD-R that didnt work was an 8X DVD. The DVD+R's that I got to work are only 4X. Might be onto something there... who knows. I'm just happy to get it back working again. Only bad thing is that I just bought a spindle of 25 DVD-R's that need to go. Anyone want to buy them for $10?? PM me.

Not sure if this is the one you have but this Benq does not show itself compatible w/ -R DL

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Revi...rticleId=10450

So you may have a combination of Software out of date and drive firmware.

It definitely could be. DVD+R is the more compatible format for movies in stand-alone players. Some DVD players won't even play DVD+R discs.

*update*

the DVD-R DID burn correctly. I tried it in a newer model of DVD player. And it played. So... the conclusion is, I burned it successfully in both DVD formats, but I couldn't view it on my PS2 or two other DVD players, but got it to play on a brand new one. The DVD+R played on all of the above players.

Not uncommon. The older players made you pick between which format you wanted. My buddy can only play -R and another can only play +R's. Xbox is nice...plays both. Picking the right media is important as well. You can say I used to be in a business where burning good DVD's was a must...I have by far had the absolute best results with Taiyo Yuden dvd's. Tough to find I think. I buy them in cases from CDW though usually.
