I can make ya famous

Ok geeks, here's my scenario. Somehow I goofed and I can't seem to install a printer on my machine. When I try to add I get this message:

"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running."

I have a printer to print photos and need this up and running. Any idea on howl to turn it back on?

right click on my computer, go to manage. scroll down and hit the plus sign next to Services and Applications. highlight services, scroll down to print spooler. Double click, then choose start.

more importantly something on your machine is killing off the spooler service, probably a bad print driver.

i have also seen where you have to go into the properties of the print spooler and choose start on bootup... (a bad driver or malware can turn off your print spooler)

After doing all that this is what happened:

"Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Any other suggestions?

Have you run a spyware scan from AdAware or Spybot lately? If not you should do so. Make sure you are up to date on those two. Delete whatever you find on the scan.
Make sure the other service "Remote Procedure Call" is set to "automatic" on startup and "RPC" locator is set to manual.
Reboot your PC.

Would you suggest running REGEDIT and take a look around?

no. the drivers themselves are stored in a directory, just find them and delete them. dont root around in your registry if you don't know what you're doing or what you're looking for.

google search manually removing print drivers.

no do an actual google search on how to manually remove drivers... I would POSSIBLY suggest run msconfig and turning off any suspecious software programs in your startup, as a way to test... but don't do this if you are not sure what you are doing

Yeah, don't mess with the reg, if you do, you better have that windows XP installation CD ready, you'll be busy for next hour reloading your OS .

&#$*@(!

I'm familiar with REGEDIT and MSCONFIG. I won't mess with the registry because I now see it's not needed. I will check MSCONFIG and search the net. Damn, I did not want to spend my afternoon with this. (sigh)

What will this do?

EDIT: Holy sh*t, this worked! I did it and then rebooted. There were two printers. I deleted one (that I didn't use anymore) and had two of the one I am using. Then I noticed that it was offline and I well I can't believe....

Long story short, it worked like a charm. Thanks for this tip.

Your welcome. It takes off the dependency on the print spooler that Lexmark drivers put on the print spooler. So do I get to be famous now?
