wireless router question... end of rope... need help

Okay, I'm getting pissed. Technology is great when it works but with the amount of time it takes to get this shit to work I could have been riding my bike or hiking or something. Here's the problem:

My laptop will not connect anymore to the router with the security features on. It worked just fine before I disabled the security in an attempt to get my new PPC to connect to the router, but I couldn't get that POS to work and now the laptop won't connect.

What I've tried:
turning off all security features and enabling SSID broadcast. Result, the laptop connects.

Now, I'm not going to leave my router open but when I turn on the WEP key mandatory, turn off the broadcast, and enable the MAC filter again the laptop won't connect. I get the "limited connectivity" bullshit.

I've tried unplugging the router, waiting and plugging it in. Nothing. I've tried just setting up one security feature. Nothing. I've disabled and re-enabled the laptop wireless. Nothing. I've re-entered the WEP key on the laptop about a dozen times and still nothing.

The MAC address list that shows what's connecting to the router is now blank.

Help me before I destroy this shit and go live in the woods with no electricity.

what bit WEP are you using 64 or 128. are you using the passphase or the hex #? What laptop and wireless card do you have?

actually you should use WPA or WPA2.

Its not mandatory to disable the ssid broadcast.
Did you put both mac addreses in??
you need one for the wired connection and the wireless connection.
forget the mac filter if its giving you trouble.

did you update the firmware?

I'm using a 128 WEP. I eventually just reset the router with the button on the back and re-set all of the shit in the menus.

The laptop is now connecting with the WEP and MAC address filter enabled.

I don't know why it worked that time. I hate this shit. You can do the same thing over and over and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. There is no consistency.

I have another networking question, but it involves my PPC. I think that should be in another thread.

You should check to see if there is new firmware available for the router. You prolly already know this but by pressing the "reset" button on the router, you are now running the firmware that the unit shipped with. This load may be several versions behind. What make and model of router do you have?

Not that I don't sympathize with you frustration, but if the time was spent in development to remove all the bugs from these home routers/firewall devices before they are released, they would not be profitable at these price points; if they are not at these price-points, then they would not be marketable. We (Americans) as consumers just love this cheap shit from foreign manufacturers All of us are penny wise pound foolish, myself included. just my .02

Phil, I've got a Linksys B router. I've never updated the firmware but I am thinking of just getting a router/cable modem combo. So I'll probably leave it alone unless I can update it without messing up the wireless connections. As for the damn modem I came home yesterday and had to reset the modem 3 times for it to finally start receiving a signal.

Tony, I have the same problem with my work laptop. It just won't connect. I've tried a Linksys card and the internal card. I usually just plug it in, too.

Mike, hell now. I'm retiring to the woods where I don't have to deal with anyone.

Yeah, there are 3 other secured networks and one "linksys" unsecured network my laptop sees. I use the linksys one just as a baseline to make sure my card is working.

Hey, Kevin, do you know anything about the new Cingular 8125? That's the thing I really need help getting connected.

it's a bit more complicated than that. For some reason it'll connect to the router but it won't connect to the internet through the router.

+1 those other people are probably using the default channels and causing conflicts. Ask Butch, he had the same problem, and when the channel was changed the problem went away.
