Best Buy sells your old hard drive

Well not yours, but someone else's....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/wlwt/20060601/lo_wlwt/9303216

From working as a pc tech at Best Buy years ago...I can safely say that it's about the worst place to take your pc.

That sucks. Very similar to when you throw your mail in the trash. It's not secure unless you personally make sure your stuff is destroyed.

I'm sure it was just an unscrupulous employee selling hard drives on eBay or locally instead of destroying them like the company's policy would state.

That said, BB is still a horrible place to have a computer serviced. The staff's knowledge is generally weak at best, Geek Squad or not.

I hear you, ever since I saw a Law and Order episode with crooks buying people's information from homeless dumpster divers, I have been on guard. I've solved most of these problems by having paperless billing and payment for most of my transactions. Keep a big box for the rest when I get ready to shred it.

Solved? Actually you've opened your data up to a far larger audience. Instead of the handful of crooks that would have physical access to your garbage, now your data is only a firewall away from the entire world.

You're right as well, but I try to be as careful as possible. At least here, I have some type of way to trace where my information may have been compromised. I don't know the homeless guy off the street, but I knew which site I gave my info to

Not to mention old and forgotten 'backup' tapes or ones misplaced or lost in transit while getting 'vaulted'....as has happened in the past.
