Windows Vista

Not sure if you guys know but Windows Vista Beta 2 is available to the public as a user trial. Click here to download your copy.

It's a 3.5 GB download which needs to be burned to a DVD (iso file).

Who's going to try it out? I'm ready for a re-format and am thinking about installing it. Anybody on the IT side know of any known problems with it. Is it safe to install and run it as my primary machine. I know they dont recommend it, but I aint got two computers at home. But I do have my work laptop, so I think I'll be fine.

File took about 7 hours to download on DSL. Not bad.

Need to find a DVD burner at work now...

I think you'll still have issues with some drivers and certain system level apps.

Overall it didn't seem that fast.. p4 prescott, 3.5Ghz, 1gb ram, 160gb sata, ati x800 agp video (256mb).

More eye candy IMO.

Edit, if I could connect to MS, I'd have this bad boy dl'd in under an hr.

I'm currently running build 5386 in a VMware virtual machine and I wouldn't recommened running on a computer that you need to use for any daily tasks. It's quite the resource hog right now (worse than XP).

Damn, sounds pretty grim but I do like all the eye-candy stuff. I set-up my XP to look more and more like OS X and it looks like that's what Vista has done.

I hear ya about the crashes. But this weekend I think I'll give it a go and see how it performs on my home laptop.

I hardly keep anything on my laptop's hard drive. I re-format like once every 2 months.

It says recommended 512 MB RAM, but sounds like even a gig wouldn't be enough. I do have a gig on my laptop, but it's also 128 MB shared video RAM. How much of a handicap is it not to have dedicated video RAM for Vista. I dont run any games, but sounds the like fancy GUI needs it.

It's Longhorn, not Vista psstt!

That beta is gonna be a roach motel of bugs. Why go through all that hassle to have it be able to do jack shit.

It is just out there to give people an idea of the look and feel. Look at some screen shots and call it a day.

I think the consumer versions are actually going to be called Vista. And Longhorn will be used for the server edition

The name Longhorn was not ditched, that is the code-name for the next Windows server platform, which will replace Windows 2003 Server R2.

It's awesome! The installation went very smooth, actually pretty quick compared to XP's installation. GUI is certainly much better. Most everything from XP installed on Vista. It's running very smoothly on my machine. It woke up from Hibernate real fast, cause they changed how that works.

You get to search for a application now instead of going into cascading menus. I'm 50/50 on that. As now you have to type to open an application. In XP, the mouse is enough to open an app.

Windows Explorer looks very much like Mac's Document Explorer (forgot the name).

IE7 is pretty slick, tabbed, preinstalled search bar... hmm, just like FireFox

Sidebar is cool, but it's not as flexible as desktopsidebar.com

It got a bit screwy when I was trying to install Acrobat Pro.

And just the Windows installation takes about 6.5 GBs! But it is running great without any hangups (I dont have dedicated video RAM).

Here're a few screen shots:

Lots of that stuff doesn't work in Vista. You can resize with Irfanview pretty quickly, but I don't know if that work in Vista either...
