Or, if your not too keen on security, you can use the canned remote desktop.

+1 Kegger.

RDP within WinXP. As long as one side is secure, you should be fine.

Yeah, just make sure they put the port and protocol holes on your companies firewall. Sometimes if you have multiple public IP's its alright to MIP or VIP to the machine and hit an unused public IP. If your firewall can truly "stealth" the IP, hackers wont know there is something listening on the other end and you shouldnt have any issues.

RDC will only work if those ports aren't blocked by his work's firewall which they tend to be.

Go to my PC gets around any port blocks as long a Port 80 is open outbound. (if he can get a browser running he can use it)

Not necessarily, if the proxy is setup correctly, it will not let it out or in even if it is HTTP:80.

Yes, RDP is fine...not the most secure, but what can ya do...it's good enough and I use it.

On your home pc, you need to allow your router to pass through your connection by opening the RDP port 3389 I believe.

Then you must allow your pc to accept incoming connections.

Get your public ip address...you can visit some site like ipchicken.com to get it.

Run RDP from work and try it.

If that doesn't work, you can change the listning port on your home pc to something else, assuming your work blocks the RDP port of 3389, to a more common port.

Then if you change your listen port on your home pc, you'll have to remember to dial into it with the new port number such as

67.168.13.78:newportnumber
67.168.13.78:80

Would have to know how your network is setup. Youre probably NAT'ing out from a single IP address and your internal IP address (probably entire network) is different. Thats why I was talking about MIPS (MappedIP) and VIPS (VirtualIP) earlier.

After much research on this subject and talking with an expert on this stuff, he said GoToMyPC is the safest way to go, so that's what I did. I have a lot of important info on my home PC, and I don't want to take a chance with security. I've been using it for 3 years now and it works great. If you pay for a year up front instead of monthly, it's cheaper.

I second a VPN connection into your network and then a RDP / VNC as both are free. If you don't have VPN then you will need to consider other options, but VPN should defeat the firewall, as everything is sent encrypted over that VPN tunnel

I am running similar to this, and on a broadband connection, very close to LAN type speeds. Its even not too bad using verizon wireless broadband on my laptop.

that ultraVNC is pretty nice. I just downloaded it. has quite a few nice features.

Now for my question. I am trying to use this to actually go the opposite way. I am trying to acces my home PC from work. I cant use RDC since they have shut down those ports.

Is there a way that I can list out the ports that they have left open? in other words, how can i find out what ports they have left open thru the firewall?

You can probably find some site online that will run a port scan for you.
