I have a hd lcd, and I am really happy with it. The xbox 360 games look freakin' awesome. I've never seen them on a plasma tv though.

Right

When do you want me to come over. We can test it out on your set.

I have pixel shift and all the bells and whistles of SBP and it still can happen. After playing maybe 30 mins of GTA there was screen retention of the power level that is in the upper right corner. Sure it went away but try it for hours and see what happens.

If you got image retention after 30 minutes I have to wonder what PDP you own and what your image settings were at. I wouldnt leave a game paused for 12 hours but I wouldnt be afraid to do several straight hours of the same game. With your rational I should have burn in issues when I watch 2 hour movies that have aspect ratios wider than 16:9.

2 hours is the limit.

Go to the AVS forums and you can read tons of threads about people with 4:3 bands burned in their screens and the correction cd that is out for it.

Bottom line, if you have a choice LCD is for gamers with no worries. You want to be worried about screen burn then get the plasma. I have both. Plasma no longer has a game attached to it.

Do what you want. It's your money not mine.

if they got 4:3 bands burned in I bet they watched 4:3 content all day on it. you're right, 12 plus hours will probably cause some image retention.

picture is still better on plasmas, though the sharps are looking good these days in the lcd market.

Vcook, you know I love my plasma. I just am not willing to deal with the possible problems I have heard about and even screen retention is just lame. Most of these new plasma sets have a white screen - why? to deal with BS screen retention. My set has a white screen and a scrolling black to white - it's there to remove screen retention and anything on there long enough = screen burn.

The is from some guy on a forum posted on the 10th I know the guy is a noob but if you use a LCD you have none of this:

"Just Bought a Dell 50" W5001 Plasma T.V. I'm of course a Newbie at this whole plasma thing & I have a Xbox 360 & a Playstation 3 for bluray Disc. One small thing I have to mention image retention, image retention, image retention(burn-in) Holy Marcaral, I was playing Gears of War for 5 hours straight at a time, blown away at what I had, of course on the top right, is a bright white image of what gun your using, and how many bullets left, just sitting there eating away at this phosphorus technology leaving a stained image on what I dreadfully paid 3000 grand for. now what's great is it had a screen conditioning option in the settings, thank god but too late, it's still siting there 2 & 1/2 hours straight of doing that. What the manuel doesn't say about that feature is it reduces your screen brightness the more you use it & reduces the T.V's life. So here I am stuck in a rut where the only the thing owners manuel says about screen burn-in is that it's not covered under your 3 year warranty, all I can say is that I hope the pixels go out before my 3 year warranty is up so I can exchange it & start over, Please, DONT DO WHAT I DID......."

is it LCD that looks wierd when things move quickly on the screen? My sister got one (either that or plasma) and when she plays games with fast movement (first person shooter turning around and such) it would bother me because it didnt seem smooth. Maybe that was just her tv though

Matt...you dont necessariily need a flat panel. For about half the price, you can pickup a quality brand DLP/LCD rear projection (Samsung, Mistubishi). Im not talking about the CRT rears either...these are the 15-17" deep 70lb units.

Something like this...

I've got a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV. Supposedly it looks as good as a plasma. The blacks are fantastic and there is no motion blur. I haven't had a side-by-side comparison but I am amazed at how awesome everything looks.

Upon the advice of fellow CLSBers I'll be hooking my PC up to it this week.

I bought the 32 in Westinghouse HD LCD @ Best Buy. It had consistent good ratings at every website I looked at and it was in my price range. I didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a tv, but still wanted a good tv.

I also would recommend an LCD over a plasma. I thought that plasmas had solved the burn-in issue but I guess not completely.

LCD

You can get a 37" Olevia 537H for around or slightly less than $800. I'm impressed with how well it does with the 360, as well as, OTA HD and SD tv signals.

I have a 37" Westinghouse LCD. I opted for it because it had a higher pixel count (1920 x 1080) and was less expensive than the Samsung. It's actually labeled as a monitor because it lacks a tuner. But since it has 2 DVI inputs, 2 component, s-video, & AV - I can hook up nearly everything I need to all at once. It works wonderfully as a computer monitor as well. What it lacks in darker images, it makes up for everywhere else. Edges are crisp. No ghosting which is what HD is all about for me. It rivals the 30" mac monitor I use at work. There's plenty of online discussion about plasma technology. When I was shopping I decided to go with LCD because I read that ultimately the plasma display will get worse with time and become useless. LCD is used in all sorts of applications and when the bulb dies, you replace it and basically have a brand new display. At least that's my understanding. Good luck!

very few LCD panels have a replaceable backlight, I would not use this as a determining factor. The rated half life for lcd panels is the same as plasma panels.

And another thing- I think alot of people buy "plasmas" because the first large flat panel displays were plasmas and there is some status associated with the word. As opposed to LCD which is commonly associated with cheapo digital LCD watches. A friend of mine bought a condo recently and she was excited cuz it comes with a "plasma" tv. Though I'm sure she doesn't know for sure if it's plasma, LCD or DLP.

im with vcook, plasma the picture is alot better. CRT's probably have the BEST overall picture. I have yet to see a TV that has a better picture then the 53" pioneer elite CRT my dad has. but thats a monster hulking TV that eats up some serious room real estate.

Good choice, I was going to purchase one of these on Black Friday as a second LCD and read many, many, good reviews on this model. The only reason I didn't get one was because I decided to wait and get a PS3.

Ghosting effects on LCDs mostly occur on cheap lower quality LCDs with slow response times. My Dell 24" LCD has never showed any ghost effects. You get what you pay for.
