I have the Verizon card that plugs directly into my computer and use it a lot when I travel for work. It gets the job done...all you do is plug in the card and hit connect and you're online

meech is referring to an evdo card, you get them through wireless providers and they work very well. but you'd need a laptop to get online. other options would be a smart phone that has evdo capability and you could get online on that, and if you're slick you can hook it to your laptop and run it as a high speed modem too.

Cards can be anywhere from $50 to $200 depending on the deal/rebate you get. W/ a 2 yr commit you can get unlim data from between $60 and $80 a month.

If you really need it, it's a small price to pay for 'always there where you are' convenience.

Verizon is another carrier w/ excellent service, even while traveling in the car. I had a coworker drive from Phoenix, AZ to San Jose, CA and there was just a tiny dead spot between Gilroy and I-5 (maybe 10-15 mins tops) as he went through some mountains. Needless to say we were impressed. And it's pretty darn fast.

You can get a Sprint EVDO Rev A Card for Free with a 2 yr and pay $50.00 a month for unlimited use - Sprint has by far the best wireless data network and the new Rev A Cards are backwards compatitable meaning if you travel into an EVDO area that is not rev A, it will default to standard EVDO speeds and if well into the sticks, you may default to 1XRTT - Rev A should get you between 600-800 both up and down and burst to over 1 mg if able

Theres no cheap answer Ken, belive I've looked at every option. The only thing that is cheap is like Arch says, find a Panera or other place that has free wifi and get on. Hotels are great for this. I use thier parking lots all the time.

If you don't need access that frequently, or if the cost isn't worth it, just call a friend who you know will definitely be online and ask them to look it up

not that easy, more like security.
i would need to give that person my access # and password which would open up a major can of worms if it fell into the wrong hands.

What type of Sprint phone do you have? Most newer Sprint phones can be used as a wireless modem via Bluetooth or USB cable. My Sprint Sanyo M1 works nicely as a wireless modem and DLs at a blazing 700Kbps.

All you need is to get the Phone as Modem plan from Sprint. Check with your Sprint rep about the cost.

you can get one of those Sprint PCMCIA data cards for your laptop, that would be the best and easiest way to do it. Alternatively, you can get the data service added to your cell phone then connect to the internet via Bluetooh or the USB cable.

I have the data service on my Treo through verizon and connect to their EVDO network via bluetooh. Works great!
