whats that program again? "combining all documents together without doubles"

i remember back tony was asking about this. i am running into the same problem too.

i have alot of files all over the place on different computers and drives.

i want to take all of them and join them into 1 master "MY DOCUMENT" folder. but i want to make sure it will only add to them not delete a file thats in there or have doubles of this or that.

whats that program called again and where can i download it.

thanks.

thanks not to sure this is what i am looking for, let me explain a little further.

at 1 point in time i had a copy of all the files, pictures, documents etc. ALL THE SAME

on each computer i have "3 of them" and my external hard drives "2"

well its been a while and now all of them have been added too from time to time with different things.

so what i want to do now is MERGE all those files to get a master copy of all my info, and once again distribute it among all my sources.

so i would like a program to dump all the files into and it will not keep duplicate files or folders etc. "other wise cleaning it all up and not having doubles etc."

thanks.

Seems like what you need is a file server - a centralized location to keep all your files. There can be ways to merge changes in different locations for some types of files (text, MS office documents), but it is impossible to merge changes to images, videos or MP3s for example.

What you ask is simple on the surface, but in reality there's an onion under there, so I have a few questions about your expectations:

What do you want to happen when files of the same name are encountered? They may be totally different files, you realize this, right?

01.jpg in 1 directory may be different than the same filename in another directory, etc.

By the same account, documents that collide in names are often just 'later versions' of each other (though not all the time). What's your expectation for how this situation is handled? Again, toss out identical files or keep only the latest or rename upon collision?

Everyone Exaggerates

no that cant happen.

pictures for example there might some here and there "DSC001" in 1 folder for dirt bikes, and the SAME file name in another folder for street bikes "EXAMPLE"

so i cant have them dumping 1 for another.

also same thing with word documents, THERE ALL the SAME FILE name in the differant computers, but i have made revisions to most and on each one its a little different.

if this is that difficult, please just tell me to sit down 1 day and just go folder my folder to check it all out for the versions i want to keep.

i dont want to loose nothing, so i rather be safe and burn a few hours working on it versus turning it over to a program and loose stuff.

What you want is *ANY* collision where the file checksums (mathematical calculation done on the CONTENTS of the file) differ, to renamed in an easy to identify way to denote a collision w/ differences.

Any collision where the checksums are equal (denoting SAME FILE) to just delete the duplicates.

This is the functionality you need. I don't know if some sync software gives you that ability or not, but we could write you a script to perform these actions providing you have the cygwin package installed (Gives you a unix-like environment under Windows).
