Just bought a laptop

So I just bought a Gatewat laptop. It's got a 17" screen, Intel pentium Dual-core processor, 160 something something, and it uses Windows Vista. Just bought it brand new for $699. Did I get hosed or is this a decent laptop for someone who's just using it for internet and other piddily shit. And is there anything I should stay away from or not download or crazy shit like that. ( already aware that porn take up alot of room and has viruses )

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. The laptop will be more than enough for internet and piddly shit. After all, a P2 can do that. A dual core with vista will be good for pretty much everything unless you are doing professional CAD or 3d animation.

Put a virus protection software on there and you will be fine. Downloading music and videos (porn or anything esle), while illegal, will be fine through something like limewire. Just don't download .exe files. if you do, the virus protection should catch it anyways. also download a program called "adaware" use it once a month to scan for spyware. it's free from download.com

You need 2 products here:
1.) Antivirus app
2.) Anti-spyware/adware app

I would go with Trend Micro AntiVirus (not processor intensive like Norton that eats up your processor quite a bit) & Webroot Spy Sweeper or AdAware-se (forgot who makes that). If you go on porn sites you will get trojans and adware/spyware so stay away from those. I work in Geek Squad part-time so I canít tell you how may times people have only Antivirus and they get screwed.

Use FireFox instead of Internet Explorer. IE sucks. I also recommend deleting the 500 trial programs that are installed on the computer when you first get it. My friend got a brand new Dell and I spent a good half hour uninstalling all the programs that the computer comes with but you don't need.
