Cell Carrier? Which One?

I've been with Verizon for a couple years now, and am paying way to much, do not like their phones and want tmove to a GSM network where i can swap phones easily and move internationally with no problems.

What do you think would be the best solution for me? I know Cingular and T-Mobile are both GSM networks and both offer global roaming . But from your experiences, and what you have heard which network is the best and more economical for a college student?

Thank you very much!

Been with Verizon for years now, I'd rather pay a little more for reliable service than a cheap plan that has no service in a basement or elevator

Ooo!!!!!! and da TV phone i have now, sooooooo cool!!!!!!

I have sprint becasue no GSM network had coverage at SIU when I started down there. Sprint is pretty good, I hate their customer service about 75% of the time, but then again, that's pretty much consistent with any carrier I've ever had. Tmobile if you have to go GSM, they rock with giving you a new phone everytime you renew your contract. I wouldn't leave sprint at this point because like bug said, it works fuckin everywhere.

I have really had no problems with Cingular. There have been small things here and there, but I've been on this same plan for about 6 years and it's been good.

Actually Primeco is now uscellular. they bought up primco to get a footprint in the chicago market.

If I remember correctly the roots of the current att wireless go back to Cell One.

I have Cin/ATT. It sucks. When it was Cingular it wasn't too bad, but for some reason the past month I've had more dropped calls than in the past 3 years combined.

I'm thinking of moving to Tmobile or US Cell.

Don't think its the phone. I hadn't had a dropped call in quite a while, but when ATT took over it started happening, once or twice a week.

My phone isn't that old, either, and I've only dropped it in the toilet twice.

Hey Alison, if you do switch who would you go with?

I currently have Verizon... They suck!!! The service is ok (standard-IMO) the customer service, minute allocation and billing from them has been mediocore!!! We are on a family plan. They gained me as a customer and the bill is never right. The extra minutes they added on is always on the other phone line, NEVER on mine (always get billed for 46 or so minutes over, then we have to call to get them to correct that). This has happened EVERY SINGLE MONTH since switching to a family plan!!! I had T-Mobile prior to using Verizon and I liked it. I used to have them when they were VoiceStream as well. You said you are in college. I wouldn't get any GSM network based phone if you are not in a major city 98% of the time. GSM networks are supposed to cover the major highways to other major cities but they usually don't, you will experience dropped calls and dead zones. Basements and elevators... There is really no cell phone provider that can do much about that! But for the cost of my plan and issues we have had with phones and minute allocation Verizon has been a disappointment! Maybe it has something to do with having a family plan (don't really know, nor do I care). But I would go back to T-Mobile in a heartbeat to not have to call into customer service every month for Verizon to fix our bill!

I used to work for VoiceStream way back when... So I know the issues of anyone getting a GSM phone. I know for a fact if you go to Northern Illinois University you won't have any problems. Can't speak for other schools. GSM is great if you travel overseas, conteniental international traveling won't matter at all (a non-GSM phone will work in Canada and Mexico).

T-mobile now, wish I never switched from Nextel.

Have 3 Sidekick 3s and they all suck. Background noise and dropped calls. Not to mention late voice mails and Text messages. Only thing good in AOL Instant Messenger.

Cannot wait to switch back or to something else.

This thread is pointless, it's like debating which is better: getting kicked in the balls, punched in the face, or poked in the eye. All the carriers will be good for some people and horrible for others.

Too bad it isn't easier to test drive each service for a week and see how they work in the areas were you work/live/play. My Nextel service is solid at home, but poor at the office and comepltely useless at my girlfriend's place. TMobile is ok in each location, and Cingular is the opposite. Whatt'a gonna do....

Exactly. I think most cell companys allow you time to try out the phone where you would use it. For me, I have no complaints with Cingular. I always have signal and worked alot better for me where I work and live then my old Nextel. My only complaint with Cingular is that for some reason, picture messages from a Verizon user usually take hours for me to get. Funny.
For me, Cingular works great in the southside, burbs and Loop.
