AT&T DSL users, got a question for ya.

I am thinking about switching as My comcast service has been up and down all month, I have had 5 to 6 service techs out here and to no avail they cant figure out the problem. Can some of you DSL guys go to speakeasy.net and do a speed test from the chicago server and let me know what kind of speeds your getting? also what are you paying a month and for what level of service?

thanks guys.

i know a couple of people that switched to AT&T and have always had problems. When i had comcast in Streamwood, we had the same problem as you. turns out it was the cable that was buried in the yard that was messed up, they installed a new cable and life was great again.

ugh, my work sucks:

My drop has been replaced, as have all the splitters and connectors, DC block, tap faceplate, and I do an african rain dance, everytime I log on, it still drops for hours at a time. I even went and bought a new router the other day just for shits and giggles.

today they are coming out with another new modem.

we have had numerous techs and 2 Line tiechs out to troubleshoot the whole neighborhood, Fact is I am on one of the last taps in the network and something is interfering with us up the line, but they never come out when it's actually happening. I need something reliable and need it now as I work out of the house.

I have 3 PC's and they are all doing it. One cat 5 and the other 2 are wireless. all of them can ping the router and then the modem upstream during these outages.

Sign up for the 3Mbit or 6Mbit service if you can. I miss my ATT DSL. It maybe slower than Comcast but the speeds are more steady and consistent.

I never had any major problems with my 6mb AT&T (SBC) DSL. People say it's slow but I don't get why they would say that, it's not a noticeable difference if you get one of the better packages. Only reason I dropped it was that it was costing me $60 a month and I don't even use the home phone. If they would let you take DSL sans a POTS line I'd be all over it.

Lord, beer me strength

I have had DSL since Ameritech rolled it out back in like 97. The only problem I have had in the 10 years has been that my modem is outdated and I have to restart it every 2 months or so to let it resync. Problem is that it is too dependent still on distance from the main hub. I am trying to get it in my new house but it seems there is no hub within 2 miles.

Ian, I have a free DSL modem you can have. This one is just over a year old. PM me if you want it.

I've had Comcast for at least 6 years now at two different locations, (Elmhurst & Elk Grove), and haven't had any issues with it. Other than a few minor things, it's been very reliable for me.

Revisiting this topic - Does anyone have the "Elite" service ATT DSL. The one that is advertised at 34.99 a month. How fast is this connection? Do I have to open a phone line for DSL or can I just pay the flat fee of 34.99 for DSL service.

I'm assuming the "elite" is 6Mbps - how does that compare to Comcast? I'm use to downloading pr0n at like 250-300 kbps can I expect the same with this connection?

2585 is roughly a little over 305 Kbps. Not bad.. not bad at all.

Sweet, I might actually take you up on that offer. So that number that I call will offer me a better price than 34.99 as listed on the web page? If so that would be sweet. I'm still in the process of moving and may need to sub in the next month or so.

Doesn't DSL speed depend on how far your home is from the Hub? Or are the Slowski's telling lies?

Yes, speed is related to distance, and the quality of the line and whether or not repeaters exist, etc.
