Waterlogged Cell Phone

Yesterday my son jumped in the neighbors pool with his cell phone in his pocket.

His first instinct was to open it up and turn it on. Maybe that didnt matter because Im sure it was on when it got deep six'd

Its now dry - when powering up it makes wierd beeps and groans. Is it screwed and should I just go get another phone? Ever happen to anyone else? It wasnt an expensive phone for this very reason although I expected him to lose it before dunking it

Funny, I just put my Razor though the washing machine for a full wash cycle, you know, just to clean it up a bit.
My neighbor is an enginerd for Motorola and told me to take out the SIM card and battery, place it in the oven at 150F for about 10-15 min. I did this and I got it to turn back on, only lasted for another day or so.
If you have a bunch of those silica packages that come with new electronics, you can put them into a zip lock with the phone and take a less agressive approach to drying it out. BTW, most phones now have a sticker on the inside that indicates whether it's ever been exposed to water or not.

Oven is what I would do as well.

If the caps get soaked, it's dead.

You probalby need to start shopping for a new one. But try the oven trick first.

Replace it, My wife washed her razor phone, it did come back to life a few days later but the mic on it never came back so you cant talk to anyone.

I bet they never had problems with people washing phones when all we had was the old brick phones.

I thought the newer solders had a tighter temperature tolerance than the older lead ones (can not stand as high or as low of a temp before failure) Maybe I'm remembering partial information about it...

What type of phone and who is the carrier? Most insurance won't cover water damaged phones. It may be good for parts, if the LCD is not damaged.

you're too honest... if the phone is insured and its worth more than the deductible call them up and say you lost it... then they'll cover it after you deal with all the bullshit paperwork they have you do.

Trust me I know how to work the system. Reporting it lost only works so many times before they drop you from insurance.

Remove the battery and use a hairdryer to dry it out, but that only works half the time if that. I would do that before I put it in the oven.

And if it doesn't work, find a cheap one on ebay.

Hell, just leave it out a few days. My brother's wife washed hil Palm and it was fine after a few days. Cells phones are hit and miss, it might work in a few days, might night. I got stuck in a monsoon at the taste in 98 (hip deep water in 15 min) and after a few days the screen came back and it worked fine.
