I think that depends on how you want it to be profitable, us college kids aren't gonna pay for an app when there's 10 free ones just like it. Maybe you can come up with something that's an advertising gold mine but for the app itself to need a fee it won't go over so well

You gave no idea what the FB database is worth do you...

From an advertisers perspective you are being given everything from the persons sexual preference, to whether they smoke or not, and that make it a demographic goldmine. SPecial eggs And Ham

AdrenalinJunkie: Good luck with whatever you choose to do. I suggest taking a look into SMS micropayments and affiliate offers as two of the most important factors in what you choose to create.

are you sure you know what you're talking about? He wants to design an add-on to facebook, people aren't gonna pay for an app if there's 10 free ones just like it. The amount of information on facebook isn't the point. If he can design an app that gets a lot of use/downloads and can get people to pay him to put their adds on it he'd be set

FB database has nothing to do with the apps.

Oh, sorry, I thought he was talking about profitting from social networking sites. Those meetings I had in April with the creators of Tagged and Hi5, and my continued involvement with the heads of CPA Empire, Copeac, Azoogle and pretty much every other CPA network out there clearly means I know nothing about profitting from social network sites. Clearly I should resign from my day job and let you take it over since you clearly know the industry better than me. The point of the matter is he does not have to charge for ANYTHING to acheive a eCPM of well over $10.

I'm just stating this from a user side, the apps aren't really unique, it's hard to profit from them. How can he make money from not charging anything?

I'll give you some examples:

Situation: User states on their FB profile they like Linking Park
Solution 1: Show offers for ringtones, no CC required ($17/lead)
Solution 2: Point user to iTunes for affiliate sales (5% or so)
Solution 3: Point user to eBay (generally 5%, but can be alot more)

Situation: User states they smoke
Solution: Send to CPA offer for quitting ($50/lead)

Situation: User is in the US
Solution 1: Send user to zip submit offer, no CC required ($3/lead)
Solution 2: Send user to email submit offer, no CC required ($5/lead)

Situation: User is a college grad
Solution: Send user to mortgage offer, no CC required ($80/lead)

Situation: User is not from the US
Solution: Send user to Poker offer ($30-250/lead)

Situation: User is a student
Solution 1: Send user to student loan, no CC required ($30/lead)
Solution 2: Send user to payday loan offer, no CC required ($12/lead)

Situation: User is male
Solution: Send user to dating site, no CC required ($8/lead)

Situation: User is female
Solution: Send user to SMS horoscope offer ($12/lead)

I hope you're starting to get the picture, the demographics of sites like FB and Myspace are hugely valuable, and it doesn't matter what you offer the user in your FB application (aslong as they stay around), all that matters is what you advertise to those users. A single person with the right marketing technique and enough programming knowledge can make big profit.

but all that has nothing to do with an app. That would require an app that basically generates pop-ups based on their profile information. The facebook apps are something close to google widgets. Add a compass showing your political affiliation to your profile, pick your top friends to show in your profile, put 30 second samples of music on your profile, make your pictures into a slideshow, they don't advertise to people as their purpose. People could just surf facebook and generate ads without making an app.
