Wireless

Okay I was just given a laptop for my grad school. It has a wireless card in it. Does this mean I can go sit in a Starbucks and use the web? I also ordered a wireless router for my house is there anything else I need.

TIA

At Starbucks, you have to have an account (I think it is with TMobile, can't remember) to get access to their network, you sill see it, but will not be able to connect unless you have an account.

Starbucks is in cahoots with T-mobile and their hotzone crap, so I believe you have to pay at starbucks. but i know panera, culvers and a few others have free Wifi. look for the sign that says "free wifi" and you should get a signal there.

Yes. You need a 4 year old to show you how to use it.

Try using WPA2 or WPA before settling for WEP.

Buffalo wild wings also offers free wifi, as do some hooters. great lunch spots to catch up on work.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

They are encryption methods so that you are not broadcasting data in the clear.

WEP is *VERY* easy to break.

Your router will allow you to configure whether you use WPA2, WPA or WEP or nothing for encryption. I listed them in the order of most secure to least secure.

Panera was free last time I checked.

I used to war drive. In the past 5 years, I've seen WiFi go from 10% locked and the rest wide open, to 90% locked and the last few wide open.

Leaving your WiFi wide open allows your neighbors to leach off your bandwidth, and local hackers to try and raid your computer of pr0n and personal data.

I guarantee that WiFi-equipped Panera Bread locations are definitly 'free' assuming you are a patron. I eat/work at Panera a few times a week.

Actually sitting in the car right now using their WiFi to check a customer's site.
