Xbox 360 HD DVD drive plays both DVD and HD DVD, but you cannot play HD DVD in any DVD player including of course the Xbox 360 console.

I think BluRay has been outselling HD DVD now for a while. I wouldn't go banking on either format quite yet.

when you compare stand alone sales HDDVD is winning, console sales of ps3 are what makes bluray in the lead.

Yes they are leading, but the disc sales are outselling 2-1. I'm not a BR fan, but the only thing keeping them from dominating is the price. If they could get within range of the HD DVD stand alone player price, it's over for HD DVD. They have the studio backing, a good chunk of Blockbuster stores locked in exclusively to make this move. Put out a BR player for $250, and HD DVD can pack their bags.

Personal reasons mostly. The Sony of today is not the Sony of the 80's and 90's that all of us loved. Their products don't dominate the market because they are good but because they are forced. The PS3 was delayed to include BR. There were some problems, some hangups, and Microsoft has Sony beat today (may easily change in the future). Not that Microsoft is a dream, but the whole point of the PS3 is to push BR and not a gaming system. This is why it started off as failing. I bought the 360 to play games...not watch HD movies. If I want to watch them then give me the choice to buy an add-on as they do or a stand alone player. With the PS3 you are paying a premium right out of the box for what's still a proprietary technology. Until the war is over, or until there's a very clear leader...I'm not buying either.

Sony could care less about the gamers and that's obvious in the fact that the PS3 has lost a ton of exclusive games to the 360, and have almost no games worth playing in the first place. It's only towards the end of this year that their hot titles will be hitting the shelves. This isn't out of the norm...the 360 didn't have a lot of killers out of the box, but with a year extra on the market, why would I buy a PS3 today over a 360 when they offer nothing more? Now a year from now if BR wins and the technology is standard with all their solid games coming out it might be a different story. But today, for the price tag of it being a gaming console ($500 and supposedly going back to $600 once the new SKU comes out) it's just not worth it. I want to play games, not watch Blood Diamond, or pay more for a system to play the same friggen game on it as the 360 then go on forums and argue that the sweat in the detail of a game looks better on this system or that one.

responding to Firebretha's post comparing gaming systems actually.....

I personally prefer the Playstation line and was planning to buy a PS3 and its nice that it has Blu-ray built in. I buy my movies in BR format and if HD DVD ends up winning then I will buy a HD DVD player then, but I'm not waiting for a clear winner or buying movies in an old format. If I didn't have a PS3 or xbox, buying a stand alone HD DVD player would be a better choice since a blu-ray player costs so much more.
There are more xbox360 owners on CLSB so any XBOX VS PS3 debate will surely go one way.

You get 5 free BR movies when you buy a PS3 also.

From my understanding the BR in the PS3 is considered better than the HD DVD in the 360 when it comes to quality. That's a big up for them. But the big down is simply the lack of games. I can enjoy a PS3 later or enjoy the 360 from last August when I got it. I think most gamers had high hopes for the PS3 after the PS2 was clearly king of the previous gen. The price doesn't give you anything other than BR which right now is useless to 98% of the market right now. The PS3 is not the choice for gamers as is clear from non-existent sales (except from the temporary price change surge). So far the Wii is proving itself as oddly the next gen console. This shows that sometimes it's about the fun of the games and not cramming as much tech as you can into a box.

for what its worth I have no desire to watch movies on a gaming console, even if it's a decent player it will not hold a candle to a good stand alone player.
