Off to go take a MCSE exam, I'm so far behind in certification as I work in the real-world, but alas I still need to get that paper cert. So I picked the hardest test first, and have had almost zero time to study test-prep materials. Oops. This will be interesting.

I hate multiple-choice, multipe-answer, scenario-based questions that chew up all the test time.

good luck, I stopped when I got my MCSE 2000 and MCDBA, no more certs for me , since I am out of consulting and at the level where nobody gives a shit about certs anymore.

BTW, we just got an opening in the group - windows admin position - virtually no end user support, only back end shit.

I found an awesome (paying) job right out of college without any real certs. Then I got laid off and couldn't find a job in the industry to save my life, and was so far behind that I really didn't want to- and couldn't afford to catch up. Here I am today- still not making even within $10k of what I made right out of college almost 8 years ago and totally turned off by the industry.

Not looking for sympathy, just showing an example of slacking off on your certs.

Ah, tanked it. I need to find some more study materials and devote more time to actual test-prep materials. I just spent 2 days untangling an AD-integrated application partition replication P.I.T.A., but then have to subject myself to a bunch of stupid questions on this test about dial-up users.

Seriously, what global, fortune 100-sized corporation uses Microsoft VPN solutions or is still using LMHOSTS files? Microsoft should just stick to what they know the real-world uses these products for.

Dell used Microsoft VPN 3 years ago, not sure if they still do.

How did ADAM install went?

I teach MCSA/MCSE classes as my side job and I can relate with what you are saying. the books are so far from reality that I constanly have to make disclaimers in class, such as " this is what you need to know for the test, but this is how yo do it in real life"

This is exactly the reason why I haven't bothered to pursue any certs on my own. They aren't worth the paper they're printed on to folks who actually KNOW what they're doing. Granted, some companies get kickbacks and discounts on maintenance agreements and such for having "certified" support members on staff, but often times the company will pay for your cert if they like you enough. Spending a few hundred to save tens of thousands on contracts is a no-brainer to most financial directors.

I work for the 2007 Microsoft US Central Region Partner of the Year award winner, so it's kind of important that I get my certifications upgraded.

It's just frustrating that I am designing and deploying solutions at an advanced level to large, well-known corporations, but the exam material just doesn't fit what I actually do; there is too small an overlap between test scenarios and real-world application.

Well, I got screwed by HP. I took all sorts of classes and got all sorts of Certs...but they were internal to HP. So when they laid me off, all my (suposid) certs evaporated.

I was working on everything from laptops to tape silos and everything in between.

HP is a bunch of bastards.
