getting on XBox live??

Alright so I just bought an Xbox 360 recently and talked about some of the things that are available with Live and wife sounds interested in it, might get her to use this a little more than the old xbox.
Anyway I am trying to find out the cheapest yet best way to connect without having wires running all throughout the house.
What I have right now is the Comcast Triple play, so internet and phone, I can't change the modem that I have and I think I have a hub too in a box some place, or maybe I sold that at the garage sale. I don't know.

Anyway computer is upstairs and modem right next to it (desktop), got the xbox on the big screen in the livingroom down stairs. Computer is a few years old (don't want to get started on this) so no wireless set up for it. Would like to keep it wired, but just get the xbox on the wireless.

Remember I am looking for most simple, cheapest, but best option to do here. Recommendations?

Cheapest and arguably the best way is to drill a hole through the floor and fish cat5 line down. Take a look at your Comcast modem...you may have a second line out and not even need a router.

Like Cruz said, cheapest way is to drill and get a cable long enough to connect to the box. Although, I would say this is a good time to join the new millenium and go wireless, plus I don't want holes and cables all over the place. For wireless, you will want a wireless router and a wireless card for the Xbox 360.

we're still agreeing in our first sentences..., drill the hole and run it that way, thats about as effective as you can get without going wireless.

Nope, will cost you about 70 for the wireless router alone, and you know Microsoft is not going to give you a discount on a wireless card . I have a mixture of wired and wireless. The Tivo, computer, and Xbox are wired, but notebook and anything else from now on will be wireless.

Drill hole, run wire. Also, depending on equipment and distance, wireless may cause lag.

BTW, the middle PS3 comes with wireless built in.

alright so now that I am home, just looked at the back of my modem and only one cat5 outlet and it is being used by the cable going to my computer right now. one telephone jack that is going to my phone line and then there is a USB output, the square looking one not the flat one like on my ipod cord plugged in the computer.

so much for just running the wire downstairs

You're gonna need at least a router to connect it to the internet unless you physically want to switch the cable everytime you want to play and then switch it back to the computer. I don't think the USB port will work for internet access.

ok man, before you go spending $$ on wireless, why not get a cheap hub from walmart, then go to home depot and buy like 40 feet (like 10 - 20 dollars) of cat 5 cable and hook it up. sure it may not look pretty and you can probably rearrange it but at least that will solve it temporarily until you are ready to upgrade / drill

I have heard a few people have lag issues doing things that way. For myself, I have used a linksys wireless router with activity from a computer, notebook, and the Xbox, with no lag or any other problems.
