$98 HD DVD players

In case anyone was looking for a cheap HD player.

http://holiday.ri-walmart.com/?section=secret
The Toshiba A2 (which will be replaced with the A3) is being sold for $98 starting tomorrow (11/2) at Walmart along with 5 free movies (I think those are included via rebate). And they have a few HD DVD movies for $15 each.

I hear Best Buy has the same deal for $99 on the same players and give you 2 movies in store free then 5 via mail in rebate.

This may be a stupid question, but do HD-DVD players play regular DVD's?

Yes, they upconvert as well. So your regular DVD should look better on an HD DVD player than just playing in a standard player which doesn't.

Something to consider, unless you're running 1080P, you'll get just as good of a picture out of an upconvert DVD player and regular DVDs. That is, if you have a 1080i or 720P television, you will see no difference with HD DVDs or BluRay.

Interesting. I been looking at a Denon for the last week for a little more money.

Might have to pick this up instead.

I don't follow. Do you mean that the picture will look the same between a regular player and the upconvert player on my 1080i or that a standard DVD will look the same as a BR or HD DVD disc on my tv? Because unless I'm totally missing something both of those statements are incorrect.

???
Normal DVD is 720480 resolution of data
HD-DVD and BD is 1920x1080

there's more data therefore you should see a better pic on your 1080i OR 1080p h/w

those are too loud. I prefer stand alone players to game systems as players. Mostly personal preference, but the fans in game consoles are annoying too. My current player is a panny 5 disk hunk of crap.

What I was trying to say is that an upconvert DVD player running regular DVDs will put out as good of a picture as a 1080i or 720p television can handle. Because of this, getting a HD DVD player or a BluRay player is overkill and you won't notice a difference (between an upconvert with Normal DVDs and HD DV/BluRAY) unless you're running a 1080p player.

wouldnt the picture be less sharp for an upconvert dvd player compared to the full resolution of the hd dvd? just thinking along the lines of blowing up a picture, its pixelated or w/e and looks fuzzy

I follow your theory and you are correct, but I was under the impression that a 720p or 1080i TV isn't sharp enough to notice a difference and that since it can't run at the full resolution of HD DVD, there's no point in buying the player. I have an upconvert on a 1080i DLP and it looks gorgeous, definitely good enough for me.

you're only partially right on res issue. the 1080i will show a better pic if there's more data presented to it. so HD-DVD and BD movies will look better than an upconverted DVD movie

the only real difference you should notice between a 1080i and a 1080p set is fast motion across the screen will look better on a 1080p set since it draws it in one pass instead of 2 times on the 1080i set

This thread is making my head hurt...

So for my 1080p a HDDVD is good, right? And this is better than adding the HDDVD to my XBox? BTW, I've been using the Xbox to watch DVDs too.

Wow, I can't believe people are actually this confused.

Smartdrug is wrong. HD quality is leaps and bounds better than an upconverted standard DVD picture. Just compare your upconvert to the HD picture you receive on your cable box.

And Bladerunner, it's the same thing as the add-on for you Xbox. It plays HD-DVD's.

I wasn't doubting that the quality of an HD DVD was better, I was doubting whether a 1080i/720p TV could show that difference though.

I have been corrected and I'm wrong, sorry to put you out Keyhole, I'll keep my confusion to myself to keep from disturbing you in the future.

to help out other people on the 1080i/1080p issue, the A2(which is this player) will only output 1080i. However all of the data is there, it's just interlaced. If you have a TV that is 1080p native it will deinterlace this signal to 1080p for what is referred to these days as "full hd".
