Ortega Back to Form at Blackhawk Farms
Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, IL was the location for the ASRA Pro Series this last weekend. Dan Ortega was able to win the red flag shortened race aboard his MD Racing built, Convergence Technologies, Michelin Shod Yamaha R6.
We’re in the midst of a drought here in the Midwest yet Sunday morning we awoke to light rain. A delight for the local farmers but not what most racers like to see on the morning of a race day. The track was starting to dry but Mother Nature was teasing us with on and off light rain. The race director has already declared it a “wet” event. With 10 minutes before the 5 minute board Ortega made the decision to run DOT tires. The weather held out and it proved to be the right decision! Most of the field went out with DOT tires for this race. The track was for the most part dry. Ortega said, “I don’t really mind the wet I just want it to be either wet or dry. None of this in between stuff.”
As the green flag dropped, Ortega quickly worked himself into the lead with an exciting pass going into Turn 1 on the first flying lap. From that point Ortega put his head down in the challenging conditions and put a good gap on the rest of the field. On the 7th lap of the race is when the drama started. Ortega appeared to have come to a complete stop at the exit of turn 1. Ortega later said, “the bike just died going into turn one. When I got it to start the “fly by wire” throttle didn’t work. So I had to completely shut off the power and let the electronics cycle. It seemed like 5 or so seconds but it was probably more like a second. I finally got it to start and work normal.” By the time all of that had happened, the pack battling for 2nd had caught up and passed for the lead. Ortega had charged back and caught them within a lap but then the red flag came out. The race was called and it reverted back to the last completed lap with Ortega in the lead. “I got lucky on this one that’s for sure but I’ll take it! I think I might have been able to work my way back into the lead with under 2 to go but it might of gotten ugly” Said Ortega after the race.
Ortega had a good weekend. It started off a little slow but after getting a few things sorted out, he went on to win his final 4 races including the ASRA Pro Sportbike race. “I’m really happy to be able to get Michelin back on top of the Podium this weekend. The new Michelins are really good!” Said Ortega.
Dan Ortega would like to thank his sponsors. “Without them I wouldn’t be racing this year”
