Rat farts! It's TOMORROW???

Looks like the weather will be a lot better than last year! And I need to rearrange my schedule a bit... but yeah.

Last year was an absolute blast.

And here's hoping that's as close as you and I get to those walls for the rest of the season!

Remember, they run cars at that track. The tires walls are set up in a specific manner to ensure they "stay put" when something comes barrelling into them. They take some pretty decent hits over the season and must be repaired in order to work properly. Remember what's BEHIND those tires - Armco and other "nasty" stuff. You DON'T want to be crashing into something that's going to disintegrate or "blow apart' when you hit it...

Nick, if you wanna come down and Armour-all the tires, knock yourself out.

Like Kim said, its to rebuild the tire wall from all the damage over the previous year. Last year we got to drive on the track for a while.D (I'm bringing my helmet Kim)

Well, that was a LOT better than last year! Sunny skies, a tad windy but the sun was WARM!

Arrived just before nine... there were probably 75 guys there (mostly car folks). Bill and Claudia Ritger, Robb and myself were the only "bike people" there... nevertheless we had fun. There was coffee and donuts, then quick work of rolling the tires out toward the track and loading them into two trailers. At the combined request of SCCA and the EPA, all the tires had to have drainage holes drilled into them (mosquito abatement) and have been bolted/strapped together to form a more car-safe barrier. Whether the new setup is more bike-friendly remains to be seen, but the cost to the track was something like $1.00 per tire (figure 60,000 tires and do the math.)

Many hands made for fast work - we were done by 11:00 and then it was time for beer, we got our "thank-you" coffee mugs and many folks hit the track for a few hours. Bill, Claudia and I headed into town for some of the best Mexican food I've had in a long, long time.

It's funny, once I drive past the gate, across 6 and into the paddock... it seems like the weight of the world is lifted from my shoulders. It's such a freakin' HAPPY PLACE. I can leave all my problems and stress back at the gate.

Oh yeah - the divot in Turn 1 has been patched.

Too bad the first CCS weekend at Blackhawk won't be until May.

Hey, that was one of my reference points! I'd imagine some 4 wheeler will just garf it up again, anyway.

i got questions if you guys can fill me in.

do you guys get paid for your labor?
do they somehow discount any track time you do for them in the future when you help them for free if so?
with the rising cost of blackhawks farms, how can they ask for free help when there prices increase year to year and now they are dumping money into that other track versus the continued updating the track and field and inner pit areas, let alone the washroom?

just some questions that i am wondering about.

No Ken, this was all volunteer work. The track being open was our "payment".

But like Kim said, just 5 bike people were there (Ya forgot about Jan, Kim). They sent us out in packs of 5-6 cars. No passing, 50mph, no holding back and speeding up. My group had a 328i, then a vette, then a maxima, then an olds and my truck with a stang cobra bringing up the rear. After about 20 min, the olds pulled off and teh stang followed. So I was following the others. Then the vette pulled off. So the 328, maxima and myself were the only ones from 'our' group there.

Heres where it gets silly. I was not going much over 50 (55 max), but was basically not slowing for the corners, just like the Bimmer was. The Bimmer was holding back then speeding up for teh corners and was doing an est 70-75 from 6-7. He slowed to 40 on the front straight. Well after a few laps more, teh guy running the "pit out" pointed at me with both hands . But since I was a bike guy in a pickup, I take it he thought I was going to fast. Pulled in the next lap and just passed by him. He didnt even try to say anything. SO I havent the clue what the fuck his problem was. Oh well.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Ken... sounds like you need to address your concerns to Mike Irwin.

Personally, I view Tire Wall Day as another opportunity to hang with my friends at one of my favorite places... get some fresh air and sometimes enjoy the weather.

Ooop! How could I leave Jan out!
