Post: Learning Curves @Road America

Well, I'm back from Road America after Learning Curves school. If Johnny (mrmoto) wants to post up..

Starts out with registration. Same as CCS (gobs of forms, lots of money), but LCR has it's own line. Which is nice because the turnout for hte event was huge. Bring the extra cash for gate fee, I didn't and ended up putting it on a credit card I'll email Rick and suggest he put that into his email.

School started with a classroom session. Learned all the flags (which most NESBA folks know) and the gridding/start procedures. Learned a few things. After tech and equipment overview it was time to ride Good thing about the class room stuff was that it allowed us to heat up a bit, since it was pretty chilly that morning.

We got in an extra session thanks to some groveling/schmoozing with race officials. It was pretty much an open track day for me, since even the worst cornering guy (who was on an R1) was able to pull ahead of me. Most were faster than me but I rarely got lapped until the end.

Kimmy was cornerworking at Canada corner, and unfortunately she had a lot of flag waving to do Couple guys went off track there, and followed it up by going down there the next session.

The mock race was pretty crazy. They grid in the order you sign in, so I was third. Then, of course, I killed the bike when the board turned. They don't screw around up there. It was pull up to my grid spot, the 1 board was out, 1/2 second later the flag went. During racing I doubt I'll even worry about the boards after 2. Everybody flew by me on the start, then it was fun.

All the track sessions were pretty much open track days for me. I rarely saw anybody since the only other guys on SV's were one of the instructors and Johnny (mrmoto). I think I ended up last - 2 places in the race, since there were a couple folks on 70's bikes. . They looked pretty good for being 30 years old. Oh, a couple didn't finish the race. I think there were a couple crashes and one guy had a mechanical problem on the back straight. But I finished, so I got my certificate The race had lots of flags, the crash truck went around to simulate the ambulance. Oh, and how many people can say they raced with an AMA supermotard factory guy?

It was pretty good. The extra session really made it worth more,
in essence it was $150 for 3 sessions and a race.

Cool, Grover. So when are you going to get your race license?

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Yeah, I talked to Rick a bit. I really wanted to talk to Brian, the physics instructor. He's got a race prepped SV, gobs of go fast goodies.

I went to this one since it was at RA, I wouldn't have to worry about the slower cornering folks too much. It was just open track time to me. Even though there were about 40 people, it wasn't congested to me, all open!!

Hey fool, where the hell were ya after the school? I was looking for ya. FOund your bike, but no you.

As for riding with an AMA super ho-tard racer, I got to ride with (more like be PASSED by) Chris Urlich, Tez, and a couple other AMA racers.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

I was out and about. Think I saw you once but I was heading towards the track. I didn't stay by the bike too often. I should have stayed to catch the end of the Team Challenge. I guess Brian and Jason came in second.

Supermoto guy was Benny Carlton, really nice kid out of the Ducati Corse dealership in Saukville. Flew by me like I wasn't moving. Of course, at the race, I wasn't!

The 70's bikes were really good looking. Oh, I should edit my post a bit. Kimmy said I DID come in last, just ahead of the DNFs

Way to go Chris, now May 8th drop your bike off man and head out there.

You know you want to, in fact that is the stipulation for you borrowing the soldering iron.

I just got an update from the guy I'm getting the plastics from. They are going out sometime this week. I might not have them ready for racing, and I know I'll be broke financially (like that's stopped any of you before.)

Bring the bike over and we'll eliminate your excuses with not having it ready.

I'm telling you zip ties, you don't need mounting hardware for plastics, if I had a dime for every zip tie on my SV I'd have my first race weekend paid for.

Um... zip ties may not fly through Tech. Do yourself a favor and order some Dzus fasteners from L-P.
