XT laptimers?

This may be a stupid question but I need to ask anyway. So, is the "special"
download cable for the XT timer is just USB or is it something proprietary. Basically, do I need to spend 45-50 dollars for their cable or will the USB cables I already have work with the timer?

It's basically an IR to serial adapter, IIRC. I seem to remember something about their software being written to use a serial (COM) port - it's also possible to install a driver that emulates a COM port off the IR, but since that apparently prevents other IR dependent software (like Palm sync.) from working I never tried it.

The answer to this question is YES you need to spend the money. OhFugit and I have looked over this, and I've tried the IRObex driver and it still doesn't work. They have switched two pins inside the cable, so that you cannot do anything without their cable.
