Road America facelift

I just read Road America is going to be repaved for next year! Sweet. Going to have to put that one on the calendar for sure. Anyone else psyched about this as much as me?

Has the surface got a lot worse recently? I was there a few years ago and there was only one noticable flaw, a dip in turn 2 right at the apex.

As long as my measley checking account has anything left in it lol. I'm going to send out a collection plate when at family gatherings over the holidays so I can support my habit. Honestly though, it is one of the tracks I plan on making it to this year. Cross your fingers for me

Well, it was 4 years ago and my first trackday, I thought it was fine. Maybe at the time compared to the streets is looked and felt good. Haven't ridden there since.

Autobahn south was impressively shitty considering its age when I was there in June, I think it was re-patched between then and the next nesba outing, but not sure

They're not repaving the entire track...just the problem areas.

Quote:
Every season, racecars and motorcycles reach new levels of performance. A thorough review by Road America reveals areas where track utility can be altered to meet these levels and provide the best possible safety features. Several track alterations will be made to the track without changing the original track design. Turns 3, 5, 6, 8 and 12 will be resurfaced with a high-wearing asphalt compound to improve wear and maintain the track’s smooth, consistent asphalt surface. Modifications will also be made to the run-off area at turn 5 to make recovery faster and easier. Another notable safety change will be a reconfiguration of the Bill Mitchell bridge at turn 13 to accommodate a greater run-off area.

Here's their press release:

As long as they repaved turn 6 @ RA I'd be happy. That is the only turn I have a problem with.

AutoBahn south, thats another story, repave the whole thing. That whole south track is beat up.

Road Americas surface has been iffy for years with patches at many of the apexes.

1,3,5,6,8,12,14 for sure .... lots of inconsistency between the patches and the seam sealer expecially in the wet.

See the Superbike Race there in the rain this year ? A disaster !

I bet you won't like it as you get faster!! Though, I did like the airborne experience in the transition between South and North mainly because I was a big Dukes of Hazard fan long ago.

Autobahn south T5 has a big square dark patch right where you'd want to turn in and if you hit it you'll catch some nice air.

Road America has a nice dip near the turn in point of T1, T8 has patch work that is so slippery you don't dare use the gas(can you say maintance throttle), Canada corner (T12) isn't bad if you like MotoX.

The worst track of all time has to be Heartland Park, Topeka KS!! Covered in bumps so bad you has see them in the satalite photos!! Its being repaved this year, can't wait to ride it all fresh and new!!

I didn't get to do the advanced day with both tracks and the marvelous transition that you speak of (it was my first weekend), but I think I ran decent times out there for a newbie. Hang on... gonna check in the garage... ok, best I ran at Autobahn South was 1:41:86. So you're right, but at this slow speed, it didn't feel that bad to me.

Of course, I remember seeing you on North, you were ripping through turn 1!

The problem with the jump warn't the steering damper. It was that my helmet would jab my toothpick into my tongue every time I landed. They should put a "No Toothpicks" sign up!

I'm with you. It's not so bad at 33's either and that's on a stiff ass 250 where every crack and bump is magnified compared to the big bikes. Now at 25's... I could see complaining about it.
