I've never been familiar with the AMA Superbike classes...but I'm interested in following since someon from this board is racing.

What class does Dan Ortega race in? AMA Superstock? If someone can break down all the classes for me, it would be appreciated...

No one from here is racing Superbike; it is the premier class in AMA.

A couple local folks are racing Superstock and Supersport. I may be wrong, but I do not believe anyone is running FX this year.

Dan ran Formula Extreme last year at Daytona. Not sure what he's doing this year. FX has the 200 again.

There is Superbike, 1000cc inline 4's mainly
Superstock, 1000 cc inline 4s, "pretty much" stock
Supersport, 600 cc inline 4s, "pretty much" stock
Formula Extreme, 600 cc inline 4s, 750 cc twins, 1200cc air cooled, 250 cc 2 smokes. Like superbike, but for 600s.

I say "pretty much" stock because the factory teams still manage to dominate all the classes. FX usually has privateers and one factory team buys the class by throwing some money into it. Last couple years has been Honda, but they are backing out and Yamaha is jumping in.

Dano was Supersport last year....not positive but I believe he's doing it again.

Here's a quick/basic breakdown
Superbike, 1000cc, highly modified, premiere class, factory support typical
Superstock, 1000cc, lightly modified, more privateers
Supersport, 600cc, moderatley modified, factory and privateer
Formula Extreme (FX), highly modified, factory and privateer

Yeah, it pissed Honda off when Buell went through the rulebook and made about the best engine it could and still make it last 200 miles (we'll see). There should be a bunch of Buell's running the FX race.. so at least the race will SOUND cool.

Amazing isn't it? Garth is a very fast smooth rider too. And he's 35th!!!

He needs to forget about everything! Forget everything in life except for riding his motorcycle rite now and he will do fine!!! He needs to not try and just do what he knows how to do!

It will be great to know when he qualifies! Just to qualify would be a great accomplishment in my book.

Here's a link to the AMA Superbike web site. If you click on "Results/Points/Schedule" it gives a pop-up with each class' current standings. There's also a Live update link for when they're actually on the track.

Garth's currently 19th in Superstock...

CORRECTION: He was 19th in his qualifying group, not 19th overall.

Hmmm, I wonder if he put Honda stickers on that GSXR?

I read an article about the Buell XBRR.. Their loophole around the rules was to take stock engine cases, melt them down and make a totally new engine.. From what Buell says, the frame is stock, and the swingarm was also melted down and recast. Now, AMA rules state for air-cooled V-twins they have unlimited modifications to the engine.. but creating a new engine from melted down engine cases? Come on man!!

the main problem is the bike is not based on a production model. the xbrr is not street legal, and something like 30 were made. It does not meet the rules.

but what buell is argueing, is that the frame is more or less a stock XB12R frame.. they modded the engine and swingarm. I dont agree, and think that the AMA just let them in to get Harley/Buell in, no matter what the rules state.

Do you actually think you can go buy a Honda, Suzuki or whatever machine that the factory teams are racing in Formula Extreme off the show room floor?

The insides of all those formula extreme bikes that are up front ARE NOT PRODUCTION.

but they all started from production bikes. Its a production street bike based class, not a prototype based class like motogp.
