Cool Mat Maldin

While I was at Daytona I got the chance to meet and talk with the guy to beat right now in the AMA. I found that there is a huge difference of opinions between fans and some people in the Suzuki camp on Mat Mladin. I, for one, think he's a cool guy. He does what he's there to do. He wins races, talks to fans, takes all kinds of photos with people, and signs whatever you want him to.(see the pic below) However, I did come across one person in the Suzuki org. that was not a fan. She was kind of upset that I had asked her to take the pic. of my tatoo with his signature next to it. For some reason that she didn't go into she just said she couldn't stand him. I wonder why? Am I missing something? Has he been a jerk off in the past? Has anybody else had a bad expirence with him?

Anyways, he liked my Suzuki "S" tatoo. So I asked him to sign it. We both kind of had a smile on our faces cause it was something different than a hat, tee shirt, or a poster.

Some say hes a whiner and a baby. Like referenceing when they had the restart he was yelling about the leagality of the Kawi team rolling a bike accross some grass or something.......All I know is yeah, hes a big baby with the points lead!

The big complaint from most people is exactly what you said. He tends to do his job, whatever the Suzuki camp tells him to do, then goes about his other business. He's got a privateer effort to manage, a couple bike shops back home in Australia, on top of money management that comes along with both those. He usually brings his wife and daughter along, and on top of all that he has to get some type of physical activity in during the day in order to stay in shape to whoop people's ass on the track. He's talked about it during interviews on Two Wheel Tuesday.

He's not known for doing much socializing with his coworkers, save maybe the mechanics and manager. I doubt anybody says he's a complete asshole, but he has a pretty detailed path that he wants to stick to.

I'm not a big fan of the guy, but not cuz he's an ass as some people think...as he's said, he is not there to befriend anyone...it's a job in his view and he performs in that fashion...i respect the hell out of the guy and actually like him too...just don't root for him.

BTW, the guy's real passion is gardening (i'm serious)

If it is still there, you should go have the autograph tat'd. A guy I went to school with had Ozzy and another rocker from the 80's sign his arm. He thought great now what,I'm gonna take a shower and it'll disappear. So he decided to go out and get it tat'd .

I have to say Mat Mladin is one of the nicest celebs I have ever met.

I was at Road Atlanta to see him win the championship last year, and got the chance to meet him and take some photos. By the time I ran all the way back to the Suzuki hospitality tent, the press agent literly closed the line right in front of my face.

I was beyond pissed because I just ran from one side of Road Atlanta (which by the way is huge on foot in a crowd) in 98F weather, only to be shut out by this woman with an attitude.

So I figured I would just wait and pick up a few of the left over signed photo's when Mat Mladin looked across the rope line and asked if I had some photo's I would like signed. I of course jumped at the chance, only to be confronted by the wicked line witch again.....

Just at that moment I was going to give up when I heard her say "Mat you have to leave to get ready for the next race" and he turned to her and said "I don't [I]have[I]to be anywhere until I am ready to be there. I am talking to my fans, and when I am done I will get ready when I am ready."

I was like RIGHT ON! Saved by the king himself..... Oh and of course he stayed for photos!

Nice pics!!

I was lucky enough to watch Mladin hop over the pit wall last year at Elkhart and walk briskly down the road...to the port-a-john ...must be hell in that little thing with a 1-piece

Oh God, that is soooooo funny you say that! Cause right after it happened I called my best friend, and he had the same idea. It's not there in marker anymore, but it's still there as a tan line. Plus I have a photo of it too.

I probably would have done that if I was a big Mladin fan.

He's damn good at what he does, but he tends to come off as a jerk with the "too cool" for everybody else attitude.

In my opinion, that photo is good enough. Having another dude's name tattoo'd on your body gets a big thumbs down in my book.

Here's my MM story...last year at Laguna Seca I saw him walk out of the Suzuki tent in street clothes with a buddy. I said hello and asked for a signature but had nothing around for him to sign except for an Wayne Rainey poster . Matt said to me, "Im not sigin a Wayne Rainey poster" and went about his business. I cant blame him so I scrambled around to the next tent and found a Maladi poster, ran him down in the crowd and he pleased to see me back with his poster. As he finished signing and turned away, I smacked him on the ass and wished him good luck.

Mostlly true.

Mostlly true.

It really wasn't a "slap" it was more like grabbing a handful, right?

It's probably some contract thing regarding him not signing a Rainey poster.

I was at Summerfest and Satriani was there autographing stuff. He'd only sign his CDs/Tshirts/posters or Ibanez guitars (his guitar at the time). I didn't know he was doing that or I would have brought my guitar pickguard
