Puttin' On The Spiff: Mid-Ohio Cleans Up Its Act
Thursday, May 04, 2006

Hello, ribbony-smooth asphalt. Oh, and hello excessive front-tire wear?

With two race weekends on the AMA Superbike schedule this season, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has recently completed the capital improvements project that it announced this past fall.

Chief among those improvements was a complete repaving of the entire track and pit lane, including the removal of the dreaded concrete patches that have plagued riders for the past several years. (decades--editor)

Mid-Ohio Improvements By The Numbers:

45,000 tons of asphalt used

4,000 feet of track curbing poured

Over 4,500 feet of board fence installed

The repaving part of the project was completed about three weeks ago, and gone are the cracks, sealer, smooth concrete, milled concrete, and abrupt transitions. According to Rebecca Ackford, Media & Communications Coordinator for TrueSports, Inc., who owns Mid-Ohio, "The racing surface has been receiving rave reviews from our track rentals and school customers."

Also part of the project, turn one received several safety improvements. The wall has been pushed back, the guardrails have been reconfigured, and the gravel trap has doubled in size. In addition, the gravel trap in the "keyhole" portion of the track has been expanded.

Among the other improvements that the AMA racers will see are all-new, standardized curbing throughout the track. Two new connectors have been added in the keyhole section, allowing for three separate course configurations: the 2.4-mile full course, a 1.75-mile "short course", and a half-mile "oval." The AMA will still be using the full course, configured the same as it's been for the past several years.

Brand-new wood fencing has been installed throughout the facility, and new landscaping has been completed around the track grounds and along Steam Corners Road leading into the track. Also, a new entrance sign has been erected at the main gate.

Mid-Ohio will host the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire on August 4-6 and the season-finale Superbike Shootout September 29-October 1, 2006.

Cool... too bad NESBA doesn't do any days there... might just have to sign up with STT.

Does anyone else think that it's strange that NESBA doesn't do Mid-OH, but it does do Nelson Ledges?

I can tell you there's a significant difference in the price to rent Mid-OH versus Nelson. That's probably a good reason. I guess STT is doing a date or two at Mid-Ohio this year. CORE is doing a date or two at Mid-Ohio this year also.
