RA - RA Tour 2006

The RA RA TOUR 2006 is officially underway. America's two fastest tracks, Road Atlanta and Road America, back to back.

On board is Ron Hix, Brian Wink, Dave Jelinek, Brent Schrader and Barry Dolan.

We left Thursday afternoon on our way to Indy. We got to Barry's house in Indy about 1 AM and then watched the Formula Extreme and Superstock AMA races at Infineon from last weekend. We all crashed about 2:30 AM or so and got up about 5:30 AM and got on the road toward Atlanta.

On the way toward Louisville, Barry's bike took a dive in the trailer and broke his rear set tabs clean off the frame. So we stopped over in Nashville and had his rear set mounts rewelded onto his frame.

Since this put us running a few hours behind, we were not able to hang out with the pink elephant and the world's tallest midget. Drats! Foiled again!

We are currently on I-85 just north of Atlanta, less than 30 minutes from the track.

Grilling and chillin is the plan as soon as we hit the track tonight. Proper preparation for tomorrow's track day is essential after all.

Well, on the last road to Road Atlanta. Just passed the place we ate ate last yr when we were down here with all the Midwest folks. 3 miles or so left... Road Trip Section 1 appears to be complete.
Significanlty slower than we had forecast.... that is a bummer.

Time to drop the trailer in the paddock, go get some beer and food, and hit the restaurant!

You guys are really crazy. What a stunt this is. It just sounds like too much fun. I'm sure you'll remember it always.

Poor Barry. First ya puts that cool sticker of your name on your windscreen, only to have it cracked a few hours later. Now the footpeg mount tabs, and you weren't even riding it! No more crashing for that bike. You've used up your quota.

Well folks. back on the road again!

We are on our way to Road America... let the second half of the "Death March" resume.

For those of you unfamiliar with Road Atlanta, it is a little over 2 mile long track with blind corners, huge (HUGE) elevation changes and a back straight that most bikes limit out on.

Ron, Barry and Brent CR'd and rode. This was their first time to Road Atlanta and they are of the same opinion that I am. Road Atlanta and Barber are well worth the drive.

Unfortunatley, we have no thad time to restock the Beer supply, but we are looking forward to getting back to a NESBA Midwest track with all the familiar faces.

Anyhow, I know that Ron is posting soon, so I'll let him give you his impressions of Road Atlanta. I posted my thoughts last year, and I still LOVE the place. https://chicagolandsportbikes.com/for...ad.php?t=35383

Have at it Ron, we'll see you folks that are going at Road America in 886 miles....

Road Atlanta is definitely a challenge at first until you get the flow and learn the track. Extremely fast with several blind corners. Very challeging to ride at pace. I think it will take several weekends to get my arms around this track. In a word, exhilirating.

I had a bit of a moment when Steve Gould had a tank slapper directly in front of me leaving me nowhere to go except into the grass under the bridge at 120+ directly at the wall toward turn 12. Somehow, I was able to gather it in and get the bike over to pit in road and brake enough to not run into the wall. Obviously, God must not be ready for me yet.

Can't wait to do Road America tomorrow. Gonna be a long night of driving/riding, but there is nowhere I would rather be and nothing I would rather be doing.

Ah yes, the infamous "gravel incident".

Well, I changed the rear sprocket from a 43 to a 42 and as a result the bike grew some real long legs down the back straight and was absolutely screaming at the end of that straightaway. Being completely without any form of personal restraint, inevitably the lap came where I kept going faster and faster until I just couldn't shut her down in time to make the tight Chicane (10a and 10b). The result was a trip through the gravel trap.
