where do i buy salvaged bikes?

I am looking for 2005s or 06s anywhere from a 636 to a gsxr750 or gsxr100.
This bike will only see track time, so I am thinking why not a salvaged bike that is low miles and straight, screw the plastics. Can I get some input into the pros and cons about this and how to go about searching for such bikes?
Can I buy them in this state? Do I need to look out of state? Etc

Thanks.

Signed, 2000 ZX9r thats to heavy for small tracks.

Find a dealer to tag along with at the auctions - Have a buddy in Indy who does this as a hobby - Buys a wreck for a g or so, puts in a g or so and sells it for 500-1000 more than his investment - He loves the wrench time and makes some change to do it

EBAY...

what about contacting a friend at a local dealership, especially one that has a big service department that would total out street bikes for a frame scratch, you could probably by the salvage cheap as an insurance buy back type deal

Much cheaper and easier to just pick up some one elses track bike. Unless you really wanna do the wrenching yourself, it'll end up being cheaper than getting a salvage bike + all the mods you will do to it. CCS and WERA boards sell a lot of race bikes pretty cheap.

Does your buddy then get a rebuilt title or sells with salvage title?

You need to get hooked up with someone who can take you to an auction. That is how salvaged bikes straight from the insurance companies are had. Usually you have to have a dealer license or be hooked up with a dealer to take you to the auction.

What he said...

If you wait till the end of the season, Sep / Oct, you can find some steals. Especially since the contigency money will be running out on those 05 model GSXR 1000's. :-D

Madmanbiker usually doesn't sell salvaged bikes, they may buy them that way but they ususally don't sell them that way, the bikes may at one time been salvaged but they apply for a dealer title and are able to convert the salvage title back to a street title to sell for street use.

Marty has a pretty slick operation going over there, some good mechanics working for him. They do good business, but you will never get a really good screaming deal there. You will get a nice paint job and whole bunch of bling bling, chrome, shit though. SOUTH SIIIIIIIDE! To get the deals that Ken is talking about you need to enter into the dealer network and attend insurance auctions.

Bikes that are totalled can range from the worst damage imaginable to something as simple as a little dent in the frame somewhere.

Some bikes are totalled only because the plastic is all fucked up. This is a road racers bargan. Buy a bike for 2 grand at an auction and the plastic is only fucked up. Slap some race skins on, do the suspension and rock out with your cock out on the track for under 3 grand on a bike that has less than 2K on the clock.

Some you can get for cheaper, some the forks are bent, some a wheel is bent. Various things.

Don Cook bought a Buell for a pretty good price, it was totalled because of a little dent in the frame. Turned out on the computrack everything was straight but its still taking a chance.

My buddy just bought a 05 R6 for 1500 bucks, forks are bent and there is no plastic, some other shit is wrong too. So then you have to figure out where and how much a front end is, get it computracked, plastic, suspension, clip ons controls, levers all kinds of shit to get it on the road and before you know it you have 5 grand tied up into a bike you figured you got a good deal on because you bought it at an auction for 1500 bucks with a salvage title but now you have 5 grand tied up into it.

Its a gamble

THE web sites.

Answer to all your questions:

Salvagedirect.com
QCSA.com
IAAI.com
Copart.com
National powersport auctions
Bayou city auto auction

There are many many more, these are some of the biggest in the nation a dealer can buy them online in a virtual auction. The days of live in person auctions are going by the wayside. Buy from home with the help of the right dealer.

I used to buy my race bikes in 01 - 03 from a guy who was a dealer in DC.

Hope this info helps your search.

I will tell you that margins on bikes like these have botten extremly thin with the proliferation of E commerce. Less than 20% margin on todays bikes.

I got mine from an auction in Indy. Some of the wrecks were goin for crazy money. This auction was thru Honda Financial, and was strictly Honda bikes and ATV's. For example, there was a blue 04 600RR that had bent forks, and a broken engine case that went for $5500. Im still suprised I got mine so cheap, all things considered. I think all of the bikes there were repossesions, but there was some nice ones, and there were some real bad wrecks. An F4i on a pallet, that was missing alot of parts, and was mostly in boxes went for $1500. I'd just keep my eye on the papers, and try to find a seller that wrecked his bike and wants to off it.

ok ken ..............................

I have the bike, its worse than I thought and better than I thought,
I will snap pics tonight and post them later, I did fire it up and it came right to life. and reved freely no probs so the engine should be ok. the tail appears to be slightly tweaked, I think?? the front end hit pretty good but appears to be straight. left side body work is gone, right is surprisingly ok.
more later with pics.
