Video Formating???

I just bought a Canon ZR600 MiniDV camcorder to mount on the track bike, and have a question about converting the videos.

First, I have to get an IEEE/1394 FireWire cable to download the video to the PC.

Questions:
  • What software do you use for editing/saving/formating the videos?
  • Will the PC automatically load the drivers for the camera once connected?
  • Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the feedback

I got my FireWire cable and was able to download a little video. I then played around with Windows Movie Maker. Pretty simple little program.

I then started using movie maker to try and lay some ripped audio over a track day video from last year. Movie Maker is okay, but adding audio over the top of a video with existing audio has its limits in Movie Maker. Limited transitions and tracks.

I've also got Window Media Encoder 9 which is good for ripping DVD's apart and then Gordian Knot for compiling DVD's. I downloaded a lot of programs last year for editing a Track Day DVD, but haven't used them in a while.

I'll look into the Sony Vegas. Maybe it's a little more user friendly than the other technical software.

Thanks again...keep the info coming

Okay...which one of these Vegas programs are you referring to?

Do the trial versions work well, or do you need the full version? $$$ $$$

with the vegas 6 demo you can explore the features and pretty much do anything you would if you owned it, except compile.

Holy Shit! Sony Vegas 6.0 Rocks

Thanks for the info, and thanks to Tom (KFD) for the help

I've been boring the wife to death making her watch the same basic video over/over again, but with "New & Improved" effects such as transitions, texts, music overlays, etc... Very nice program to have.

You can make a pretty cool effect if you have a stationary camera tape a fly-by, then use the zoom/velocity envelope feature to create a bullet time transition from the stationary camera to the onboard cam.
