How do you get a race license?

Thinking about racing this year or next. How and where can you get a racing license from? It seems like CCS and WERA are the most popular. Thanks for the info.!

When you do a "approved racing school" you'll get a certificate, you send a photocopy of this along with your licence application and your $$$ and you get a license.

With the LearningCurves school you can take the class on Saturday and race on Sunday.

Rick Breuer's Learning Curves is the primary "feeder school" for CCS. It's the cheapest, but since they run the school during the Saturday race program, your actual track time is limited to three sessions and a "mock race".

VisionSports is also an "accredited" school, held at Blackhawk every Thursday before a CCS event. If you're looking for more than just the "basics" in terms of content (going beyond "this is the red flag, this is how you grid", etc.) Super Dave is the way to go. You'll get more track time plus Dave and his staff will really work with you to master the "basics" and also help you develop your skills, work with your suspension, whatever it takes. Dave helped me a lot last year, and I'm looking forward to taking all six of his schools this year. I'm 99% sure you can take your VisionSports certificate to the track on Saturday and get your license on the spot.

Thanks for the info. I'll check both of those out. Do you have to renew your race license every year or once you get it, you're set?

It's an annual renewal - the sanctioning body will mail you a form, you return it with your license fee and 6-8 weeks later they send you your license for the current year. CCS licenses run Jan-December - if you buy it after a certain point in the year, they pro-rate a portion of the cost.

I'd like to add to this, as I am interested in racing too...

So I can take a Pridmore weekend session, say Road America this year, and send the cert., my money, a form and I get a racing license CCS or WESA?

I've also been hearing the the Suzuki SV650s are good bikes to start out on?

Yep... that's pretty much how it works - at least for CCS. I have no firsthand knowledge of how WERA works but would imagine it's the same process.
