my first CCS weekend

I can't tell you how much fun I had this weekend, the only downside is that i got a hit of the CCS crackpipe and now i want more.

SATURDAY: I spent saturday in Learning Curves Racing school. I took this same class over 2 years ago when i first road the track, i knew then i was not fast enough to compete so i never got a CCS licensce, so i had to go back and retake it this year. it was basic, and nothing that i didn't already know from taking the class before. but i can tell you that there are a lot of slow people in that class, most had never done a track day, and it showed. there were 14 people in the class, and during our "practice" sessions, i made it a point to take my sweet time running like 1:30s and lap the entire field. I was even asked to "take it easy" out there cause i was scaring the crap outta the super-newbies and they would stand it up every time i came by. but hey, its riding school and lap times are not needed. So everyone passed and i was ready to go for Sunday.

SUNDAY: Sunday came and i was up early, ready to go. I had planned on running the Heavyweight SuperSport and Middleweight SuperSport. i was told that the heavyweight was a little more... not meat grinderish So that would be a good place to start. Well thats were i did, i got a decent start but i wasn't aggresive enough into turn 1 and that cost me a lot of spots. i pretty much just hung out in the back and watched bikes hit the pavement on what seemed to be every lap. Finally after all three ambulances had to come out onto the track, they red flagged it and my race was done. i finished 17th. It was hard to make passes battling a bunch of higher HP bikes, and it was my first race, didn't really wanna push it. Next race up was Middleweight supersport, thats what i came there for. i was all pumped up and ready to go, fix my mistakes from the previous race and do it. well i blew the start, bad. i am pretty sure i was 3rd from last going into turn one. but i started to make up ground quick, went by a couple people going into and thru turn 3, got another person into turn 4, on the next lap, got one more person into turn 4, then again, one more into turn 4. then a couple more coming out of turn 5 into 6. i felt like i was on a mission! finally got behind a 636 that was slower than me, but i was having a hard time passing him. i know i focused too much on him and not what i was doing and i was making mistakes. finally into turn 1 my worst one of the race happened, i was trying to late break the guy and screwed up my shifts, the trans false neutraled and i was without power going thru T1. soon as i completed the turn, banged it into gear and took back off again. by this time the guy i was closing on had a very nice lead and 3 other bikes had gone by me i closed the gap back on them instantly as i came into T3 and going into turn 4, i passed 2 guys on the brakes the other 2 were still in site, one lap to go and i was reeling them in fast, but i could never make a good enough drive to get my spot back and ended up finishing 9th.

All in all it was a great weekend. my goals were to not crash, not get "spooked" and not finish last. so i completed all my goals and i can't wait to get back out there and run many more races.

thanks to Andrew (Morrand) for being my pit bitch for the day

and thanks to all who have helped me in the past, and who will be helping me in the future.

Great seeing you out, and looking forward to the next round!

I had a pretty good weekend too. Blackhawk, for whatever reason, is s tougher track for me compared to Road America. The first race of the day was Heavyweight Supersport. I didn't have everything entirely together on the Stupid Gixxer 2.0, so I missed the first practice session and didn't get a chance to acclimated to the newfound braking power from the Brembo M/C. I also noticed my left fork seal started weeping....Damnit.

Race time rolled around and I was all kinds of amped up, and was entirely confident in the rebuild job I did. I had a great grid position but blew the start and wheelied towards T1. Someone brushed by my right arm and knocked my hand off the throttle and I lost a ton of spots. I started chasing people back down 1 by 1, and ended up 7th with a best time of 1:16.4.

The next race was HW Superbike. I felt better about the new brake and was more confident that everything would work well. Again, I had a good position and had a better start than the first race, but still not great. The field was pretty competitve and I was riding the bike at 110% to keep up with the front runners. I was making some slow progress gaining on the 4 and 3 postions, and I set a new PR trying, albeit unsuccessfully to catch them. I did my best Gary McCoy impression and was hard on the gas coming out of every corner getting pretty sideways. All the supermoto riding really benefited my throttle control because I felt confident doing it. Turned a 1:14.2 in the process.

Next race was right after HW SB. I had a few minutes to grab a Gatorade. (Big Thanks to Justin for helping out.) I got a really good start and was running 3rd for the first few laps. 1 and 2 were just a bit faster and I lost sight of them as I had a few 'moments' when my front tire got too hot and started sliding 3-4 feet at a time and even worse tucking. I really don't like the feeling of the clip=ons going slack midcorner . I lost my mojo and got passed and took a 4th ($100, woohoo!) Only ran low 15's.

Brought the bike home in one piece, and now its time to celebrate. Fox & Hound at 8! Scotch and darts with an awesome girl is a great way to finish the day!

Congrats rob on the 14! I had a rough weekend with a few bright spots. Yesterday was slow getting up to pace with some suspension adjustments and only managed 17's finishing 8th in GTU and 7th in GTO.

Today I put on new tires and things were feeling MUCH better. First race ULSS, I got a pretty decent start and stayed behind Dustin and Jason Runte for the first lap or two ended up having a great battle with AJ Krause for a bit. Finished the race top 5 and got called over to one of the CCS officials, who notified me I'd be docked 1 lap for crossing the blend line on my warmup lap. Which was kinda my fault as I just put on my new tire right b4 the race and forgot to pump my front brakes. I came screaming into 1 on the warmup lap and quickly discovered I had no brakes and if I didn't want to asspack someone i needed to run wide. Lesson learned, a good battle and 5 finishing positions lost but I got down to 1:15's PB for me with most of the rest of the laps being low 16's.

Next race up was HWSS, got a so so launch for the 4th row back. went into T1 about 10thish. passed a number of people and saw AJ again and was looking to have another fun battle. Well shortly after that we began catching Experts to pass and he made it past one that I thought I'd have no issue passing in T2. I continued full throttle from T1 in 4th gear closing very fast on him. I made it to the inside of T2 first way to the inside and about half a bike length ahead of him. Apparently, he hadn't seen me make my move and slammed into my knee and tail hard, taking us both out. At that point I rode the ambulance along with him and our bikes took the tour of shame alone. The sad part is that the race should have been redflagged from a bad crash in T5 3/4 of a lap earlier, where the guy did have to be transported. Ended up finishing HWSS in 5th b/c of the redflag, running more 1:15's and 16's. That ended my weekend when things were just starting to really feel good again. Hopefully, the bike and myself can be mended to join you all again later on this year.
