My track bike project

Track bike project - 96' Suzuki GSX-R 750

My track bike project is coming along rather nicely. Since I started the project, it has gone a totally different direction than I had originally planned. I was going to put the front race plastics I already had on the bike. Then replace the forks, head bearings, swing-arm bearings, rebuild/replace the brake systems, coils and put in my second motor that is mostly stock.

Now here is where I am at... I bought a set of forks about a month ago, but now they are sold. I found an upgraded set that are actually for my bike. They already have Lindemann internals so I couldn't pass them up. I have sent them to Lindemann for a rebuild, re-spring and have them tuned to my weight/usage. I bought an Ohlin's rear shock and that has been sent to Lindemann for the same work as the fork. I can not wait to ride good suspension, I have never had that chance.

Then I came across a good deal on some excellent condition Yoshimura rear sets. This is the first "barely justifiable" purchase. Then I got a Woodcraft stator cover, Woodcraft starter cover, Factory pro "race kit" jet kit, Factory shift kit, ignition timing advancer and a Yoshimura exhaust header. Then I fell into a "new, in the package" Yoshimura race wire harness, Yoshimura race coil packs and Vance&Hines Powerpak CDI box.

I am now looking for a "superbike" tail, Yoshimura mid-pipe and muffler. clip-on's, clutch perch, Brake rotors(I think I found these), chain/sprockets, Yoshimura tach, head/swing-arm bearings, etc.
I also need a helmet, leathers(1pc), gloves, boots and back protector.

This project is spiraling out of control, is there such a thing a "sportbiker anonymous". If there is I think I will need to join before this project gets too much farther. LOL This is how all my project go... A simple idea turns into a complicated one.

I will continue posting my project details as I go. Sorry, I don't have a camera yet, but I will post pictures as they become available, Squirrel

The blue/white GSX-R is the new track bike.

If the price were right, I would, but I am not looking to sell it. Because I still need a street bike.

Hey Squrly:

I rode the Aprilla! Spend some money on a good track school like Freddie Spencer after you get the basics done. It'll return itself a million times over.

I hope to see you at the track this season! Happy Holidays!

SuperDave, Thanks for the pads.
Jim, looking forward to the track this summer, see you there!

I just bought an Off-set oil pan and pick-up for an unbelievably good price. Now I will be needing the 4-1 off-set header. I am also in desperate need for a Kit CDI box. The one I got is a Vance&Hines and is not compatible with the Kit wire harness. I also need the Kit kill-switch.

Update!
Here is a pic of the Ohline's, rear shock.

The Yoshimura, rear-sets.

The Woodcraft, stator cover.

The Woodcraft, starter cover.

The Factory Pro, shift kit.

The Factory Pro, race jet kit.

I found the Yoshimura, offset oil pan and pickup. Unfortunately I am going to need the 4 into 1 header, to be able to use it. But it is still cool.

I am now broke! Hopefully I can get the rest of the parts I need to complete this project when I get my tax return. I will continue to update as things progress. :track

What's the story on that?

Do you really need it? It wouldn't have been supersport legal, so there would be no volume on pipes that would work with it, new or used.

I'd sell that off and get a regular pipe. Keep It Simple Sqrly.

I hear you Dave, but I lucked into the pan and I think I will be able to talk him out of the Ti header that goes with it. I also have the kit wire harness and ignition coils. But, to use them I will have to go total loss ignition. I have lines on the super-bike carbs and stator block-off cover, but I don't have the money for them yet. I have most of the parts to build a second SRAD, so I figure I will get my current bike going and continue collecting the super-bike parts. From what I understand, I can race "classic super-bike" with all the crazy stuff on my '96 SRAD.

I will finish my bike this spring, conforming to the super-sport rules, even though I will have my ass handed to me. I do have another header, it is a Yosh stainless steel, but I don't have the spigots for it or the mid-pipe and muffler.

Pic of header.

Remember, Ti pipes crack, and you can't get them welded normally. Try to keep it simple. Just trying to help a little.

Dave, I realy apreciate the help and insight you offer and please keep it comming.

I want to absorb all the knowlage I can get involving race prepping bikes. I search as much as I can find on the computer but it seems that all the good info is kept secret.

It's not secret, it's just that everyone thinks it is. Still comes down to correct springs/geometry first. Dampening is a nice bonus. Add power. Change springs/geometry to compensate. Throw new tires at it. If you want to make it go even faster, buy a better rider...LOL!
