My return to the track... pics inside.

After a 3 year hiatus I went back to the track. This time it was on 4 wheels, not two.

Tracking a car is not a lot different than a bike... just more expensive. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. The event I attended was sponsored by Porsche Club of America and provided instructors. It was pretty cool having someone help me out my first time on the track in a car.

The race line is pretty much identical to what I would ride on the bike. The biggest difference I found was where you hit the brakes. On the bike I'd grab a handful on 4 on the front straight. In the car I could get down to 2. The instructors would brake just before 1 after being on the gas the entire straight.

There were mostly Porsches at the event, but there was also a Mini, a Civic, an Infinity, a Mustang, and a few other non-Pcars.

Even though it was my first time out I did more passing than being passed. I also learned a lot and I can't wait to go back. I want to do Autobahn now.

How did that little hatchback do? looks like a pos, but I wonder what the power to weight ratio was in that thing.

I've got to post some more pics... Just working on downloading them.

Yeah, I caught that Civic easily. It was a shitbox, I was surprised the kid took it to the event. He was OK on the straights but couldn't corner at all. I caught the Mini and a bunch of Carreras, too.

Do you think tracking the bike, then tracking the car later helped you? Have you ever done auto-cross? What was your top speed on the straight? Lap times?

Curious minds inquiring for future use of a Z06 on the track.

Yeah, doing so many trackdays at BHF helped a lot. I know the track and the lines.

I think I hit 95 on the front straight.

Didn't take any lap times. I bet they sucked compared to my bike lap times.

I am planning on doing an autocross on June 1st. First one for me.

I agree. The only car to roll is the silver GT3 in the bottom picture.

Thanks for posting the pics...was it sketchy in the wet? I bet the bus stop transition was fun. I love ACC North on a bike and I bet it would be a blast in your car as well.

That's the first thing I started pricing when I got back home. Modding a Porsche is expensive and I've got to decide if I want to start modding the BoxS or wait until I get a more track-worthy car (read Cayman S).

Good point. I thought about that later on. I would hate to roll my BoxS doing something stupid.

The instructor was driving the guy's GT3 and slid off on T7. The wheels caught the dirt and flipped the car into the air. The corner worker said it flipped 3 times in the air before landing on the roof.

Actually, the wet wasn't bad at all. By my second session the track was bone dry.

Thanks! The speed we were cornering I thought for sure we were going to flip. But that Boxster stayed planted. Amazingly balanced car.

I do autocross In champaign IL, I gotta buy summer tires yet but once I get that dont Ill start running the car down there again.

Far cheaper than an actual track day, teaches you alot about car handling rather than top speed, youre alot less likely to hurt the car as well. all thats req'd to run is a helpet which weve already got.

Ill post up next time I run the car probably make it a saturday thing, head down early morn get back in the evening

That's the $64,000 question. No one I talked to knows. Presumably since PCA employed the instructor they would be responsible, but who knows. GT3's aren't a dime a dozen, and this guy bought his recently.

If I had more corner speed on T7 and I had kept the pedal floored (I was close to the floor but not all the way down) I could have hit triple digits, I'm sure.

I noticed I didn't get nearly as tired after 30 minutes in the cage as I did after 20 minutes on the bike.

I saw him and the instructor talking after the crash. The owner looked pissed, really pissed. The instructor was injured and was holding an icepack against his head.

I saw the car after they towed it away. They left it at BHF's main entrance. I almost stopped to take a picture but I couldn't stomach it. The thing was trashed. It was crumpled on all ends and the roof was smashed in where the driver would be sitting... hence the instructor's injury. I doubt anything in it was salvagable.
