Winter has started...for me anyway...

I was standing out in the garage tonight having a smoke, and one thing lead to another, and now my bike looks like this... (see below)

I figured my track days are over, so now it's time to winterize the bike, clean the calipers, change the oil , remove the Penske to have it overhauled/refreshed, check/set the valve clearances, and various other crap while I'm bored this winter.

I wish I was going to Barber in Nov, but I just can't afford two trips this year.

Kind of what happened with my bike...Although that was after completely cleaning the garage, giving my mom's taurus a tune-up, and then having a smoke..

How much does it usually run to get the rear suspension done (would it even be worth it for mine?) I want to do the front myself, but I'm not sure I'd be able to do the rear, no-way to get that spring off the shock with what I've got in the garage.

I went back out for another smoke last night, and found that a 24" ratchet extension works well for supporting the bike at the swingarm pivot. Now the bike is on jack stands and I finally got the rear shock out.

Now...How the hell do I figure out which model Penske shock I have? I can't find any model numbers or tags anywhere on it. This shock was on the bike when I bought it 3 years ago and I have no paperwork for it. I'm guessing I'll need this information to get a quote for servicing, right?

Here's a few pictures in case anyone can identify it: (crappy cell phone pics)

You sure you want me working on your bike? Don't you remember the "newbie" phone calls with the forks?

That process starts for me next week. Been going back and forth with Turn One to get my suspension reworked during the chilly season. Just have to set up the garage to make sure the bike doesn't get in the way while it is on it's stands.

Thanks STKR... now I know what I have to look forward to

Dean

Looks like an 8987 to me, that would be a "Triple" in track speak.

You've got a great head start on me, but only because we're headed up to Road America today.

Just so you know, we refresh shocks as well as the usual full suspension stuff. The Penske refresh includes all new seals as well.

If you're interested in any service work over the Winter, shoot us an email, and check out our website at Turn One Racing "dot" com

Wish you were coming to Road America, but I know how it is at this time of the year.

Have a good one

Wow, not only are your knees bad, now you mind is going as well I had already sent you an e-mail a couple of weeks ago at TurnOne, AND you responded. I was actually still waiting on a response from Joe for the cost though. Maybe I forgot to include my screen name.

This was the shock you said had no adjustment at Road America in June, and told me my brakes sucked after riding it in the A-group. Oh yeah, I'm still loving the new RJL pads. They simply ROCK!

Thanks Marshall I'll be bringing you the shock very soon.

If I didn't start now, then once it gets REALLY cold, I won't want to do any work out there. I've already got it winterized with anti-freeze, changed the oil, and will be going to TurnOne very soon.

Now it's time to start learning about setting valve clearances. :
