I had someone to call cops on me

I just got my Tamron 17-50 at the post office and naturally had to go out and take some test photos with it. I was babysitting tonight so I took my 3 year old daughter with me for a walk down the block

2 house from mine, there was some kind of bush that interested me. So, I decided to take a picture, while my daughter was playing with something on the lawn next to me and tried different angles, naturally standing close to the bush and moving around.

Finally I took a picture and turned around to see some people across the street, looking very suspiciously at me. I didn't think much about it, but 2-3 minutes later, a motorcop came over and rode his bike right over the sidewalk to intercept me. He demanded to know where i lived, who was the girl with me, what did I take a picture off. After I showed him the picture on the camera and the bush, my ID and walked with him to my house, he was satisfied and left. Those people were very disappointed and finally walked away as well.

that made me think, how boring must be life for some people and how intrusive and nosy can people be! On the other hand, should I be happy that we have those people around as next time they could prevent real crime from happening?

Oh, the bush in question:

I've called the cops on kids that were drinking and smoking pot when I was bored and wanted to be entertained... it's fun watching underage kids get arrested.

Nice closeup, macros?

One of the best shots I've ever taken with a standard 18-55 lens and I think exposure time was 1/75th or something... no external light

My second favorite, took this end of Nov 2009, no tripot, in hand with no gloves :P I've got a few great shots like this

My Ex GF just bought me the camera a few days before that :P I was just naturally good at taking pictures

People are ignorant idiots. Though, I admit, I have done shit like that as well: some while ago I called in a guy driving around a kid in handcuffs. Which turned out to be a toy. When kids are involved, might be better safe than sorry. It's curious, though: did they call the cops because of the camera or because of the kid?

maybe they didnt recognize you and thought you were some guy photographing a kid playing in their own yard. I'd be happy people are keeping a lookout, these things help keep a neighborhood safe.

To many times people just sit back and are scared to get involved, in this case they wanted to take a step forward and try and do the right thing. No reason to think anything bad against em, I give them props.

Not that it'll hurt when something is really going down but let's just think about this for a second.

You were taking pictures of a bush. Hmmm, pretty innocent.

You're daughter was with you, in plain sight, not hurt, not being beaten or molested. Seems harmless.

You were out in public, not hiding anything, not trying to cover up your identity or hers. Hmmmm, normal to me.

Wait! tha's not just a normal point and shoot cheapo camera! We better have this checked out. Call 911!!!!!!

Now, if you were up to no good why would you hang around, calmly, snapping pictures out in the open? Really, if you were doing something wrong wouldn't you rather do it without witnesses? I mean, if they would just think for a moment, just one, they may come up with something other than dire thoughts.

Honestly, I get hassled 99% of places I shoot pictures at no matter how innocent or legal they are. Sometime just carrying a big camera is enough to scare the crap out of people. The reality is that so many folks are so paranoid that they don't reason in their head before acting.

It's a good thing and I wouldn't let it bother me. If something happened in your neighborhood and nobody called then you would be comaining about that.

I have mixed feelings about this myself.

While it's great that someone's keeping an eye on the neighborhood, the flipside is this wouldn't happen with anyone else's hobby. You don't see see people calling the cops on a painter painting flowers out in public. Like Troy said, it's the big camera. **because normal people don't use big cameras like that!!**

Although true why complain about it? Isn't worth a little bit of harassment to know that atleast people are looking out for the neighborhood. Aslong as you're legally doing something then nothing to worry about. Now days with privacy being a big thing I'm not sure I would be happy with some guy taking pics of my place either. Yes it was a bush but we all know you can click a private pic if wanted to

Nice photo, I think background background is OOF (j/k) Looks like that Tamron renders background pretty good.

yes, for only 7 blade diaphragm, it gives a beautiful bokeh, not worse than Sigma 18-50 with it's 9 blades - here is an old shot with it:

It seems to me that YES, big cameras draw attention. I think that there was a post a couple of years back about some sort of "Photographers Card" not an ID, but kind of a list of the state laws regarding photography in the open or public spaces that people could stick in their camera bags. I actually printed it out, and when questioned by a cop once, I showed him the card, and he simply read it, and said "Carry on."

Anyhow, seems like the cop was nice enough about the situation, no harm. It gets interesting when they get all pissy about the cameras and photography.

I'd rather be questioned every now and then rather then hear about a child abduction that no one saw anything. At least people care enough to call. I was loading the bikes on the trailer on Friday with King. The BG PD pulled up and asked what were doing. He was all excited to hear we're going to the track, he wants to go race someday. So we'll have to get the PD out the trackdays.

Yeah, that was one of my posts. I have a laminated copy of the laws in my big camera bag (the bag I never take out LOL). I'll see if I can find that again. But typically, most cops outside of Chicago, aren't dicks about photographers. Downtown I've heard of them drawing weapons on photographers!

I agree Greg, but I don't like a cop getting in my business. He can ask what I'm doing, he can ask for my ID, he can *ask* that I move along...but he doesn't need to see my photos, handle my camera, nor force me out of a park or public area. I guess I just get pissy when people overstep their bounds. It's just me I guess. I don't like feeling like I'm a pedophile under a microscope because I have 70-200 lens.

+1 on all accounts.

last time I checked being with your kids in public does not make you a Pedo.
